The chapter bears a dark stain, burdened by their Primarch's failures. They wear their shame boldly and without fear, given an eternal Penitence Crusade by the Ecclesiarchy and Inquisition, and they believe with all their heart that their actions in the Emperor's name will someday prove their worthiness to all, even those that despise them. The Knights Repentant is what happens when pre-Heresy era Word Bearers enter the Warp during the Golden Age of Mankind and appeared in the 41st millennium ten thousand years later.
Origins
When the Word Bearers Legionnaires (a 700 strong force) emerged out of the warp in a universe that was not like the one they knew and fought for, but a completely, everything started to go odd.
The planet Maxima Prime that they approached, and which was labeled to be converted into the Imperium, after emerging from the warp was already converted to Imperial faith after analyzing it...longer than they had in their records. When they asked their Adeptus Mechanicus staff if this is the right planet they planned to convert, even more, if the star system where the planet was situated was the right one, the priests replied that it was the same.
That was one of the first things that made the situation odd. When they made planetfall and started to read their records, it became stranger and stranger. Many of the things didn't simply make sense. The only reasonable conclusion was that they spend ten thousand years in the warp. It wasn't not so long when one of the Black Ships o the Inquisition that was in near the planet, under the command of Inquisitor Daedalus, made contact them. They never heard of something like the Inquisition, not to mention their reaction to the mind-probings of Daedalus and his cadre of psykers, yet since he identified himself as a servant of the Emperor, then they took part in all of this without questioning. What they heard was something that they were unprepared for.
The fact that they appeared ten thousand years later was already a shock, but the fact what happened during that time horrified the Legionnaires to the very core. Their beloved Primarch, Lorgar, betrayed the Emperor and was one of those who were responsible for the current state of the Imperium they fought so hard for in order to eliminate what remained of Old Night. All of it wasted, twisted, and ruined by their Primarch declaring his allegiance to what they thought only as a rumor.
The Inquisitor imagined their shock. He heard about those of the Traitor Legions that were untouched by the corruption of Chaos due to the fact that they were not there when their Legions fell to corruption or didn't even knew what happened at the time they were away form them. It was the first time he ever met someone like that, yet alone this many. The very thought about what Lorgar did was already something that the Legionnaires barely coped with. The old Inquisitor, after probing their minds and testing their genetic materials for corruption, declared the marines pure, and their armaments valid with Imperial standards (despite being outdated).
It was however true that gods other than the Emperor existed, but they were parodies of the one true they served. The Chaos Gods were a anathema that needed to be rooted out, while their fallen brethren needed to be slain. Filled with a new resolve and a with a new mission, the Legionaries made it clear that they would redeem themselves for what happened to their Legion and restore themselves in the eyes of the Imperium that now distrusts them so much. They do not call themselves Word Bearers anymore. With blade, fire and faith, they shall purge the taint and maybe if they find a way to slay Lorgar, maybe then the Emperor would let them go back to the times of the Golden Age of the Imperium, to alter the events and not let to the Horus Heresy to happen.
They are not Word Bearers anymore...they are the Knights Repentant. And they will have redemption, even if they have to pay the highest price for it.
