The foci are a Liberi's source of precious vitality and new abilities. They are immortal toys who tend to enjoy the chaos the Liberi is almost certain to cause.

Foci Stats

All Foci start with the following traits:

  • Vitality: 2d6/20
  • T: 1
  • A: 1
  • C: 1
  • K: 2
  • S: 2
  • Speed: 20 feet
  • Indestructible: A Foci is not damaged by physical methods. They only 'die' if their Vitality falls below 0. If used as a shield [a task most Foci highly dislike], they give a +1 bonus to Active defense.
  • Willful: Foci are often stubborn. To persuade them to do something for you, you need to make a Persuasion, Intimidate, or Trick check against them. This is considered an unopposed roll. In addition, a Foci often 'forgets' to tell their Liberi important details - like the 50 foot range limit, or the ability to use Divination, or any other such
  • Telepathy: The Foci is capable of communicating telepathically to anyone within 20 feet of it. Foci can speak with each other telepathically.
  • Liberi Contract: A Foci is dedicated to one specific 'class.' It can grant any of the powers of that class to one child, their Liberi Gothica. A Foci can never 'change class.' A Liberi's contract with the Foci is only nullified upon the death of either the Liberi or the Foci.
If the Liberi dies, the Foci Leeches them instantaneously, then attempts to flee the area as soon as possible before looking for a new host.
In the unlikely event the Foci dies, the Liberi immediately loses all her magical powers, and becomes a normal child. However, Mummy, Plaguebearer, and Vampire Liberi are undead within a week of becoming Liberi, and as such do not return to normal upon the annulment of the contract. Undead Liberi simply die.
  • Vitality Exchance: Foci and its Liberi can exchange Vitality between each other as an action, as long as they are touching.
  • Unnatural existance: A Foci loses 1 Vitality every day.
  • Soul Drain: When a Liberi Absorbs or Prays for a soul, it is actually the Foci doing the work, and is the one that gains the Vitality.
  • Leech: When a Foci's Liberi is killed, they take as much of that Liberi's vitality as possible before fleeing. If this ability reduces the child's Vitality to less than 0, the child's body burns to ashes. A new Foci of the same class is born from the ashes a week later.

Foci Abilities

In addition, a Foci has one of the following abilities. However, keep in mind the Foci are supernatural. For example, the Climber ability could be characterized as simply crawling up any surface, or wall-walking, or even making minor distortions in the wall wherever it moves. Whatever you like.

Can't Catch Me

This Foci moves at a speed of 60 feet. It is not slowed down by rough terrain or environmental hazards. In addition, it cannot be grappled - it simply zips past anything trying to hold it down.

Climber

The Foci is capable of climbing any surface at its speed. In addition, it cannot be grappled - it simply climbs on anything trying to hold it down.

Defender

It may grumble and moan about it, but your Foci is willing to be used as a shield. It grants a +2 bonus to Active Defense when used in this way.

Disbelief

By spending 2 Vitality, this Foci can have one target within 20 feet make a Willpower check. If they fail, they forget anything supernatural that has happened within the past minute. If the supernatural events were harmful to them in any way, they get a +4 bonus to their Willpower check.

Divination

The Foci is capable of seeing briefly into the future. However, these visions are extremely vague. As an action that costs 1 Vitality, you can ask your Foci a question about how a situation or course of action will turn out. 2 rounds later, it will answer, but it only has 4 possible answers: Good, Good and Bad, Bad, and Uncertain.

It can then go into the details of exactly what it saw, but these usually amount to no more than shadows and vague objects making strange motions. Occasionally, due to the 2 round time lapse, it will give an answer to a situation that has already resolved. This usually makes it laugh.

Intelligent

Its Knowledge attribute is 5, and it has 10 XP to spend on Knowledge-based skills.

Getaway

This Foci can spend 2 Vitality to shroud a 20 foot radius area in thick, choking smoke for 3 rounds. This cloud has a visibility of 1 foot, making it very good for concealment. Any living creature in this area can only take 1 action per turn - if they try to take 2, they must make a Fortitude check or lose both actions.

Teleport

At the cost of 2 Vitality, the Foci may teleport up to 30 feet from its current location.

Transparent

At the cost of 1 Vitality, the Foci may become invisible for 1 minute.
