Lower Planes
The Lower Planes is a term from Dungeons & Dragons introduced in the Planescape setting. It is a way of collectively referring to the planes that are characterized by their prominent Evil alignment, as on the standard planar "map" these make up the lower half of the Great Wheel.
The Lower Planes are, of course, contrasted by the Upper Planes and the Middle Planes, which collectively make up the Outer Planes.
The five planes that confirmedly make up the Lower Planes are:
- The Nine Hells of Baator (Lawful Evil)
- The Bleak Eternity of Gehenna (Intermediate point between Lawful Evil and Neutral Evil)
- The Gray Wastes of Hades (Neutral Evil)
- The Tarterian Depths of Carceri (Intermediate point between Neutral Evil and Chaotic Evil)
- The Infinite Layers of the Abyss (Chaotic Evil)
It's a matter of some contention where to place The Infernal Battlefield of Acheron and The Windswept Depths of Pandemonium, as these occupy an intermediate point between Evil and Neutral, and so some maps will place them as part of the Lower Planes and others as part of the Middle Planes.
