Mordenkainen

Mordenkainen is an archmage from the Greyhawk setting, and technically that setting's equivalent of Elminster (no, he isn't), being the Big Name Adventurer-Patron Wizard. He runs the Circle of Eight, a group of archmagi who mostly serve him as grunt-labor for his plans, and is an old adventuring buddy of Iggwilv, Murlynd and Zagyg.

He's best known for appointing himself the one-man peacekeeper of the world... unfortunately for the world, he's a True Neutral of the Stupid Neutral variety and so his machinations involve fucking things over for Evil and Good alike, depending on who he thinks is going best -- this is called out as one of the reason most of his old adventuring buddies stopped talking to him.

Like many prominent figures in Greyhawk, he's an old PC of Gygax's. He had a cameo in Curse of Strahd that expands into something more if the party somehow manages to cast greater restoration at a fairly low level.
