Necropolis Knights are ancient Nehekharans warriors riding animated statues dedicated to the cobra god Qu'aph who ate dragons. In life, the rider was a member of the Tomb Guard whose bloodlust overcame their discipline or they failed to protect their charge. Rather than the shame of exile, most of them chose one of two types of ritual suicide. Rather than pick out the pansy way of quick ritual suicide, some opted instead for a painful death with a change of redemption in the afterlife.

Many tombs have giant snake statues guarding the entrance and a slot for a single tomb underneath. These were twice the height of a man even when coiled, and had fangs from which the same venom as the famed Khemrian cobra dripped. A venom so deadly, one drop could kill multiple warhorses or even more full-grown men. It's a painful death as the venom makes the muscles contract so much they break bones and cause a rictus grin that would make the Joker cry tears of envy. Most of the statues also looked like Khemrian cobras.

For the second chance, the aspiring Necropolis Knight would slit their palms, smear some blood on the belly of an unoccupied statue and hold their wounds under the dripping venom. They believed that as the venom wracked them with pain and killed them, Qu'aph would judge them, and the worthy would be reborn as Necropolis Knights. When they died, they were mummified and entombed under whichever statue they sacrificed themselves before.

In the afterlife, those who are judged worthy get to come back and ride snake-mounts, serving their king for all eternity (or until the End Times/they get chopped up and burnt by Bretonnians). The rider's soul controls both their undead body and the Necroserpent statue, giving them perfect sync, but also meaning that they can't be killed unless both are destroyed, making Necroserpents probably the best phylactery ever.

Overshadowed a bit by Sepulchral Stalkers, which have a similar niche on the tabletop and in Total War, and are also a lot cooler.
