Alternate History

For want of a nail the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe the horse was lost. For want of a horse the rider was lost. For want of a rider the message was lost. For want of a message the battle was lost. For want of a battle the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.

Alternate History is a genre of speculative fiction, nominally independent from science fiction and fantasy but often overlapping one or the other, based on asking the question of "what if history went differently?". There were plenty of events which could have gone differently if certain decisions were made or factors were slightly different and if they went differently it would have consequences on subsequent events. For example a 19th century Austrian Civil Servant has a chance encounter which leads him to fall in love with and marry the daughter of an Italian Chef results in a world without Adolf Hitler.
