The Ninh are a subspecies of humans originating from the paradise world of Kharsag. In the Imperium's tongue of High Gothic, they are known as Homo Sapiens Adaptus for their ability to take a multitude of environments with ease. The Imperial forces attached with Ninh Scout Brigades affectionately refer to them as the gremlins, for their size and ability to take apart most equipment.
History[edit | edit source]
The Ninh understanding of their history is fragmented at best, and mythologized at worst. What has been acquired through the tireless work of scribes and Adepts of the Machine Cult has revealed the following to be largely truthful to reality.
Before Contact[edit | edit source]
The Ninh were the products of mankind's many attempts to master the environment. Little can be ascertained as to the techniques used in their creation, or by whom exactly proposed, then implemented their creation. By studying the Ninh themselves, the Genetors from Mars have learned a great deal. Namely though artificially constructed they were meant to breed naturally as regular humans do. The technology to make them has been lost like so many others to the sands of time and the turmoil throughout the ages. This was a blessing however, as it proved the Ninh were not a strain of mutated humanity but a stable strain of ab humanis.
Whatever facilities created the Ninh became abandoned in the darkness that befall humanity. Tragedy after tragedy brought the curators of the many laboratories to disease, madness, and old age. Humanity would not return to Kharsag until the Rogue Trader Megasu's Flotilla would arrive in 810.M30. The Ninh crawled forth into a dangerous world, for Kharsag was verdant but full of dangers. Many horrors had been freed along with them. The Ninh would struggle until their numbers allowed them to establish rudimentary civilization. A breakthrough in linguistics allowed them to translate STC patterns and dataslates giving them a technological edge over nature.
The Ninh are peerless innovators, tinkerers, and all around crafty individuals. This does not extend merely into the realm of technology, but all manner of applications. From societal structure to primitive hunting traps, the Ninh managed to organize themselves in an alarmingly efficient manner. Despite their size, over time and with diligence, they overcame the many dangers of their homeworld. As the beasts were conquered, Kharsag's bounty as their's. A new era of development flourished as they attempted to build upon what scraps of information they had. Space faring came in this time, with both moons of the homeworld colonized in short order.
First Contact[edit | edit source]
The Rogue Trader Flotilla led by the wealthy, and influential former arms dealer Megasu Athon arrived into the Kharsag system, observing what seemed to be an exchange between the world itself and its two satellites. The ascension of the latest Irîtu, Enumuzi Irîtu had become heated to the point of civil war. The ruler was only nine years old, but would become known as a savant of his age. Both colonies had begun a campaign of open warfare to dethrone him anyway in a bid for power. Neither side could exert authority over the other, a perpetual stalemate ensued. Megasu met first with Enumuzi, establishing a line of communication and trade.
It would not be until meeting in person with the rebels to establish an arms trade with them that it would become clear these were humanoid Xenos. They were in fact, something entirely new. Requests for the presence of Pallas Eugenesis were sent out across the warp, but her arrival would take time. Megasu continued pouring weapons into the hands of either side. The rebels eventually ran out of resources, immediately attempting to take over one of Megasu's ships in desperation. The attack failed miserably. In response to this, Megasu bombed the faction into rubble. Though Enumuzi had extreme disdain for the Rogue Trader's double dealing conduct, the boy ruler realized the strength of the Imperium of Man.
Megasu made him sign in a new Compliance deal, one involving several backroom agreements. One of these involved twenty percent of the planet's population would be sent up to serve in the Imperium's armies. Half of that would work for the Rogue Trader directly. In return, Hektor Cincinnatus would personally sign in their Compliance making anyone who took umbrage into taking the near-human people in would have to meet with him directly. The Enumuzi truthfully had no recourse but to accept the deal.
Servants of Terra[edit | edit source]
Culture[edit | edit source]
Due to the nature of the Abhumans in the Imperium at large, the Ninh have been cast to every corner of the galaxy as attached companies to many Imperial Guard Regiments. Even before rise of the Guard, the Imperial Army Regiments of Ninh brought their population to many locations. Despite this enormity of distance, the Ninh maintain a similar culture no matter where they come to call home. Unless changed by directed force, the difference between a homeworld Ninh and a colonial is moot.
The structure of the Ninh family is around the elderly, the grandparents or great grandparents standing as the heads. Early on, young Ninh are given a series of task to preform that are tests to determine their success later in life. These involve logic puzzles, arithmetic problems, and problem-solving questions. There is no standardization of these sorts of tests, varying from household to household. Based on these results however, the Ninh will be given greater responsibilities. This is all done as part of an ancient practice of preparing them for life outside of the family.
At age six, the Ninh are thrown out of the house. They are expected to survive on their own wits from here on out. They are not to return until they have acquired a mate, and property of some repute. This can range from a single apartment, to cattle, to hundreds of acres in land. Upon joining the Imperium, many opt out for standard Ninh life by volunteering for the Imperial Tithe. This is done in most cases to spite their family. Those who do return are apologized too and welcomed back warmly. When the returned Ninh have children of their own, they give them to their own parents, thus repeating the cycle.
Homeworld Government[edit | edit source]
Before the unification of Ninh tribes, one leader assumed power through exemplary traits of the strain; ingenuity, inventing, and construction. This leader became known as the first Irîtu. A thousand years after his tradition, Hektor was greeted with by Enumuzi Irîtu, the boy ruler. The Irîtu acts now largely as the Imperial Governor of the system, subject to the whims of the Sector Government but still allowed to control the laws and how tithe is paid on Kharsag. This privilege was maintained through Enumuzi Irîtu's negotiations with Hektor, and his later decision to side against him with the Imperium.
The Irîtu leads the people by having a Council of Action. Members from every strata and province who must act on his command and respond to the needs of their people. Though the criteria for becoming a Councilmember is vague at best, the Irîtu is trusted with being able to choose who is capable for serving on this almost parliamentary body. The Council composes of upwards to a thousand individuals, and political blocs have formed in the past but this is a rarity. The number one drive of the Council is to keep society working at peek efficiency. In the later years of its service to the Imperium, the Council has become obsessed with properly paying the Imperial Tithe.
Physiology[edit | edit source]
The Ninh are humanoids with slender bodies and long limbs, with angular or svelte faces. Their hair is always white, though some cosmetic mutation exists in a few populations to change this. Facial hair is nonexistent within the Ninh. Males stand at 138cm to 147cm, females are the same but trend towards 138cm. The musculature of the Ninh show signs of clear genetic tampering, with the fibers containing far less mass than normal a human's, but keeping the Ninh quite strong for their bodyweight. The skeleton of a Ninh maintains the same strength as a human's, but can take great pressure before fracturing.
One of the Ninh's major genetic variations to the rest of humanity are prehensile toes and lithe, hairless tails. This allows them a great range of options to manipulate their surroundings easily. The Ninh's bone structure is dense, but their musculature is far less than normal humanity's. Fully capable of using their hind-limb, the Ninh are able of gripping five objects at once. The tail is sturdy enough to lift the entire body, giving them an edge in urban or flora rich environments. One distressing facet of Ninh physiology is a tendency to develop crippling bone disease in the segments of spine in the tail, causing paraplegia.
The Ninh reproduce far faster than normal humans. It seems sperm count remains high in all male individuals regardless of age or other factors. Gestation periods last only six months on top of this. Ninh become perfectly capable of speech within the first year of their lives as well. Their lifespans extend to around sixty years, with little signs of aging until death. Genetors theorize this is because of their constructed nature. Despite the lessened lifespans, Ninh are numerous on their homeworld and elsewhere in the Imperium.
Military[edit | edit source]
The Ninh are not known for their warrior prowess. All tactics and strategy revolve around outsmarting, outpacing, and reacting to an enemy. Ninh officers have been known for a supernatural ability to guess the approach an enemy, and the appropriate response. Most however use goading attacks and traps to make up for a lack of tact. In the Imperium, they serve as skilled Scouts capable of surveying a battlefield with ease. Many Imperial Commanders have come to rely on intel from these individuals. Sharpshooting is another profession that the Ninh easily come into, as patience comes easily to them.
