The Long Night is an ongoing quest by Durin on the Sufficient Velocity webforums, still active after over seven years (currently on its second thread). You play as a Planetary Governor of a newly settled world in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, trying to survive as the galaxy takes a massive plunge on the start of the 44th millennium (on the clock, actually).

Threads[edit | edit source]

Link Topic Date
Thread 1 Embers in the Dusk 25th of October, 2014
Thread 2 Sparks at Midnight 21st of April, 2020

How It's Played[edit | edit source]

A regular CK2 quest. Turns are one year at first, then five years, then the second thread starts with ten.

Characters[edit | edit source]

Main character: Frederick Rotbart, the Planetary Governor. Primary characters: A Living Saint, a Godlike Diviner, a demigod-killing Arbites, a Hive-melting Psyker. Secondary characters: Too many to describe here.

Summary[edit | edit source]

Basic Information.[edit | edit source]

These are the final years of 43k. Matters aren't going too badly for Mankind; recently, the Imperium had even discovered an STC collection allowing them to build ships ten times as fast (century long times don't work well in the quest). However, some do whisper of upcoming problems, pointing out glitches and flickers in the Astronomican's light *BLAM* Heresy! Fortunately, you are a pious servant of the Emperor, and would never once absolutely consider such blasphemy.

You play as Frederick Rotbart, an Administratum Adept who was promoted into the Planetary Governor of a remote Agri-World. Of course, as usual for the Imperium, someone screws things up. The Agri-World gets Frederick Rutbart, a distinguished combat general, while you are sent to the freshly colonized planet he was supposed to run.

A pet project of an Inquisitor who wanted the most elite troops in the galaxy (to fight on Daemon Worlds). You can probably guess how one gets that.

That's right. You are supposed to run the most brutal Death World in the known Galaxy. Teleporting spiders with venom that kills an Astartes in a second. Enormous laser-spitting kaijus. Herds of migrating beasts that can trample a tank regiment. Giant worms burrowing underground and capable of popping out of every wall. Trees bearing dragons instead of apples. Seas full of mind-controlling, soul-eating mermaids (looking suspiciously mer-Eldarlike) and island-sized turtles...

Oh, and did I mention they've picked the safest spot on the planet to settle?

Welcome to Avernus, the Hellworld.

What else is there?[edit | edit source]

Sidestories! Thousands of omakes, canon and apocrypha. You want it? It's here. You want descriptions of powerful creatures, both sapient and not? It's here. You want a sad story, like the tale of a mother killing her child before Daemons can claim him? It's here. A heroic story, like Bjorn's last stand against the Despoiler? It's here. A hilarious story, like the thoughts of our Chaos neighbors before we obliterate them? That's here as well.

Or perhaps you want an absolutely priceless crossover with Warhammer High, where a descendant of Frederick is banging Roberta? Yeah, they have that, too.
