The Academy is the name for a group of people who teach and follow the teachings of an ancient philosopher, introduced in 3rd edition. Consider them a more benevolent version of the Athar.

The Comparison[edit | edit source]

Like the Athar, their founder considered the greek gods not to be deities, but where the Athar claim that the gods are frauds taking advantage of you, The Academy merely finds them to be too human and fallible, and that a true god should be purely good and perfect in every way (to give you a list, they cannot be: unjust, immoral, vindictive, jealous, or ignorant). Also unlike the Athar, they consider the other gods to be just imperfect reflections of a single, impersonal deity that they call the Good, The Beautiful, The True, or some other name.

Followers[edit | edit source]

Composed of philosophers, they continue their founders duties, teaching others, holding discussions in public places, defending against "superstition" (meaning anything that doesn't do justice to the nature and character of true divinity), and initiating disciples to higher mysteries. They live an ascetic lifestyle, searching for the truth, contemplating the divine, remaining chaste and unmarried, and keeping everything in moderation. The goal of this philosophical lifestyle is to attain union with the divine and become as god-like as possible.
