Space Opera is a branch of Setting Aesthetics that applies equally well to Sci-fi or Science Fantasy; spiritual heir to the old school Sword & Planet genre, it's basically Sword & Planet where the focus is on traveling between a whole galaxy of fantastical worlds, rather than just adventuring on a single alien planet. Proudly on the "soft" end of the sci-fi hardness scale, technology is just a trapping to further the telling of an epic adventuring story - many great Space Opera stories are just Heroic Fantasy or High Fantasy stories with science fiction aesthetics.
The term used to be purely derogatory, but after the success of Star Wars, it was reclaimed as a neutral, even positive term.
