Leonide
Grave Chesspiece
Most people are surprised when they notice Leonide's Mask, as she is pretty enough that people assume she'd catch anyone's eye. It is true she has pale skin that contrasts beautifully with her dark hair and eyes, with even the dark freckles on her scuplted cheekbones only helping to make her seem more appealing. Yet, she doesn't have much of a presence so to speak. If anything, she could pass as a work of art that a person needs to be directed to for others to even notice. Her attire is always monochromatic; black and white in equal amounts, and often mismatched if possible; a black glove on one hand, a white one on the other, or in squares, such as her fingernails painted half black and half white. She has her hair consistently in a bun as well.
It makes more sense in her Mien, where she appears as a worn statue, something that has stood for centuries in a graveyard. Her skin is truly marble-gray, her freckles grave dirt on her cheeks. Her nails, her teeth, her hair, all alternate in between black and white. Her hair is a solid mass of glossy stone that doesn't move, kept in a classical, regal style, with pointed ears peeking out from the strands.

History[edit]
Once upon a time, there was a mother and her daughter, who cared for each other very much. The mother's husband died of a sickness when the daughter was small, and then, one day, when the girl was big, the sickness came back for the mother. The daughter decided one day that she would challenge Death like in the stories to save her mother. She set up a chess board beside her mother's bed one night, and called out to the sickness.
The sickness came in a black cloak and with bony fingers, looking at the daughter. He sat down and accepted the girl's challenge. Her mother's life as the prize if the girl won, both her and her mother if the sickness was the victor. They played together for seven days without rest, the girl watching pieces being striken down by the other side as she manuvuered across the board, each one of her victories hardening her heart more and more as she saw the pieces being buried in the dirt at her feet.
Finally, the girl won. But when she turned to her mother, she found that she was too late. The sickness said 'I did not promise to keep her alive during our game.' The girl attacked the sickness in a rage, picking up her chessboard, but he vanished away. In grief, the girl went to drown her rage in blood and fists and music... and found a kindred spirit or two there, who explained what had happened to her.
Now at this point, Leonide has somewhat recovered from that fateful game, living by herself and making a living, but her heart still burns with hatred for death... But still, she is alive, and that means there is hope. She will find the sickness and kill it. Preferably with a chessboard.
Lawrence Sanders[edit]

Lawrence Sanders, Law for short, is just a medical intern much like Leonide at the university's hospital. He is one of the calmest people there, which probably explains why he can actually maintain a relationship with the short-tempered changeling. That or he really likes games and enjoys the fact that Leonide actually can keep up with just about anything he wants to try (and has no problem losing). The real distinct physical detail about him is the fact that he has dyed purple hair and eyebrows, explaining it as him being normally platinum blond hair.
Leonide and him are not in the same department, as Leonide works more with pathology and Law works in Intensive Care.
