When not in use, this appears to be a relatively normal, if very dull-edged, sword, other than the hearthstone socket on its pommel. When activated--something that can only be done by the person attuned to it--the blade splits in two lengthwise, crackling arcs of Essence jumping between the two sides. Any attack made with the weapon briefly discharges this energy into the victim, easily bypassing armor.

By briefly letting the sword drain Essence from their body, the wielder can make the next attack deliver a far greater shock, if it lands. For 5m as a reflexive ability, the attack doubles post-soak damage in Step 7, but this damage will not wrap over into lethal. For an additional 2m, the speed of an attack can be lowered to 4. 4m will make the speed 3.

TL;DR[edit]

Background[edit]

As a scion of the Amilar family, Mehn lacked neither money nor education in her childhood. The girl had little time for play in her youth, being constantly shifted between music lessons, lessons in the art of swordplay, teachings on Lookshy's blend of the Immaculate Philosophy, and lectures on the many arts associated with the magitech and sorcery that give the city its might. Unfortunately, while the girl performed brilliantly in anything she was turned to, she showed almost no commitment to any one field and flitted between them as her whimsy demanded. It was her mandatory military service that finally brought some focus to her life. Between her above average skill with swords and her family's ties, she was quickly promoted to an Armiger's assistant, one of the cushier jobs in the military. Even more, her charge was rather impressed by her skill and had almost convinced her to enroll in the Academy when she finished her service period... until she exalted while defending him from an attempt on his life. Overnight, the girl went from being a borderline embarrassment to her family to one of its most important members.

As one of the few Solars to ever rise out of the city, Mehn's exaltation rocked Lookshy society. After it became clear that she remained loyal to Lookshy, she was pressured to go to the Academy to refine her newfound talents. There, she truly came into her own, mastering material with an ease that put the school's Dragon-Bloods to shame, to say nothing of the mortals. Following her initiation to Sorcery, she was given the official status of a chozei-rank wai tan-junai, putting her newfound skills and natural brilliance to work researching and maintaining the city's magitech arsenal.

Given her power and intelligence, Mehn has been granted rather more leeway than most of her peers... which is fortunate, since she retains the lack of focus that she had when she was young. Her workshop is filled with half-completed projects and notes on ancient tomes that she hasn't quite finished yet, and she's well known for disappearing for weeks at a time to chase down some hint of forgotten lore. Her superiors grudgingly tolerate this behavior—not only is the Solar too valuable of an asset to ostracize, but more frightening is the idea that they could drive her into the arms of the nation's enemies.

Her already high profile and adventurous excursions have made her something of a celebrity in the city, and her actions toward it haven't hurt. Her exaltation has raised her status within her family as well, allowing her to lavish gifts and improvements on their hinterland village, and there are more than a few whispers on the streets that she's been known to stop and donate generously to particularly poor-looking helots.

More recently, Mehn has read allusions to some of the great machine minds of the First Age, and resolved to find one, most hopefully the distributed I AM. Not only would one likely be a warehouse of forgotten lore, but the secrets of how to make one could massively benefit Lookshy. Besides, where else is she going to find a conversation partner as smart as herself?

Personality[edit]

Mehn is devastatingly intelligent, quick on her feet... and about as dedicated, worldly, and attentive as a mayfly. The world just has so much neat stuff, and she has yet to truly realize that her lifespan will give her the leisure she needs to research it all at her own pace. The fact that she basically never left Lookshy before exalting doesn't help. As a result, she's usually in the middle of a dozen half-done plans and inchoate theories, and each new power or facet of lore she discovers is likely to spawn a dozen more. This is also reflected in her wide range of hobbies—even in the field, it's rare for her to not spend her free time in calligraphy, carving figurines, poetry, or any one of a dozen other activities that don't require much in the way of equipment. She's also keeping a written record of her 'adventures' for posterity, which tends to quite drastically exaggerate her accomplishments.

The lack of any real hardship in her life has left her a bit weak-willed and naive. Any real problem can cause her to just abandon one line of inquiry and look for another way, and she can get anxious fast when the chips hit the table... especially since the only problem-solving methods she's ever really gotten familiar with are 'stab it,' 'throw money at it,' and 'research it.' Between this and her compassionate nature, it can be easy to underestimate her. Still, she's as at home holding a sword as she is delicately maneuvering a scalpel—she is a child of Lookshy, after all.

As an adherent of Lookshy's brand of the Immaculate Faith, Mehn is generally a forthright, moral person. She's not above a little subterfuge to get her way, but anything beyond a minor fib is usually off limits to her. To boot, her focus on individuals can make her lose sight of the big picture, and more than once, she's been berated for giving the family's money to the downtrodden too freely. This morality can come back to bite her in fights; after all not many people in the Age of Sorrows pursue their goals quite so honorably. It's also a horrible handicap in politics, though she somewhat makes up for it with her earnest passion for ideas—she can be quite convincing when her heart's into something.

Appearance[edit]

Despite her exaltation and vigorous personality, a mostly sheltered lifestyle has left Mehn a delicate, fragile thing. It gives her a certain feminine beauty, but in many ways, her stamina is not cut out for a life of adventure. She has yet to realize that the city's clothing isn't ideal for life on the road, so even when she is out and about, she's usually still in its endemic blue robes if she isn't armored. Her shoulder-length black hair is usually worn back in an unadorned ponytail, and she favors the city's broad-brimmed hats for keeping her sensitive skin from burning. Like most citizens, she keeps a sword on her side in almost all circumstances. About her only easily distinguishing feature is the pair of jade bracers implanted into her forearms, though these are usually hidden by her robes.
