Oddworld is the titular setting of a series of games created by Oddworld Inhabitants, launching in 1991 with Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. The plot is a little hard to summarise, as the original plans to create a massive five-part or longer game series flopped in the 90s, but the setting was revived in the 2020s.

The Basics[edit]

Oddworld is an alien planet in an unknown part of the galaxy, inhabited by a fairly large variety of weird races, many of them sapient. So far, all Oddworld lore has focused on the continent of Mudos, with the different games largely revolving around a "green aesop".

Races[edit]

Mudokans are the primary race of Oddworld, largely because they've been the focus of most of the Oddworld games that actually got made. The most conventionally humanoid-looking race on Mudos, Mudokans once were a powerful race of magic-wielding tribes who revered the various apex creatures of Eastern Mudos as totem creatures. However, they have been completely enslaved by the Glukkons and largely reduced to lowly labor-grunts.

Glukkons are the primary antagonist race of Oddworld. Whilst at first they seem to look like they go around in zoot suits with no sleeves, that's actually part of their bizarre anatomy; Glukkon arms are much longer and stronger than their legs, so they walk on their hands and use their small prehensile feet to actually manipulate stuff. The most technologically advanced race on Mudos, the Glukkons were inspired to conquer the world out of sheer spite when Oddworld's primary moon was discovered to have a massive crater on it resembling the print of a Mudokan hand, which left the Mudokans feeling like they were divinely chosen and the Glukkons feeling slighted. A plutocratic society Glukkons are defined by their absolute disdain for the environment, and have pushed multiple species to extinction or the verge thereof in their hunger to plunder the planet's natural wealth.

Sligs are a race of tentacle-faced slug-men who are the primary goons of the Glukkons. Naturally sadistic, they are happy to work for the Glukkons as mercs and enforcers for cash, the opportunity to inflict pain, and the clunky cybernetic prosthetic legs (or "sligpants") that the Glukkons give them so they don't have to crawl around on their hands anymore.

Gabbits are a sapient amphibious race who once thrived in Eastern Mudos' oceans, until the Glukkons pushed them to near-extinction by eating their eggs as delicacies and harvesting the adults as the source of super-durable lung transplants.

Vykkers are a race of sadistic mad scientists who work hand-in-hand with the Glukkons in their technical domination of Mudos.

Games[edit]

Abe's Oddysee: The very first game, a sidescrolling puzzle platformer in which you play as Abe, a Mudokan janitor who has discovered that the Glukkon CEOs running Rupture Farms have decided they are going to butcher their Mudokan workers and sell them as a new line of food. Abe must promptly escape, freeing as many of his fellow slaves as he can along the way, only to then be charged with undertaking two sacred rituals that will imbue him with the power of the Mudokan demigody Schrykill, which he can then use to sneak back in to Rupture Farms to free any slaves he missed the first time around. The game was remade with better graphics as New & Tasty in 2021, starting the rebirth of the Oddworld franchise.

Abe's Exoddus: After having brought down Rupture Farms, Abe is then contacted by the spirits of his ancestors and forced to bring down another Glukkon industry, which is harvesting the bones of the Mudokan dead and mixing them with living Mudokan tears to create a lethally addictive soda that the Glukkons intend to use to rebuild their slave worker stockpile. A direct sequel, using the same sidescroller puzzle platformer methodology. Was officially rebooted from continuity with Soulstorm in 2022, which rewrites the basic concept in a different way.

Munch's Oddysee: The last known Gabbit teams up with Abe to recover the last known stockpiles of Gabbit and Mudokan eggs from the clutches of the Glukkons and the Vykkers. A 3d puzzle platformer.

Stranger's Wrath: The last Oddworld game ever released, a 3rd person shooter set in the mysterious lands of Western Mudos.
