Red Hawk Dragons are a species of mutant dragon native to the Savage Coast region of Mystara, whose distinct avian characteristics have led to an in-universe theory that they are the result of crossbreeding between Red Dragons and Rocs.
Smaller and less bulky than most dragons, red hawk dragons feature a body that's fairly streamlined for creatures of their size, tapering quickly into a stubbed tail. Whereas most dragons have a naturally horizontal body structure, theirs is more vertically inclined, almost bipedal; they walk on huge, powerful rear legs and use their shorter forearms to manipulate things. The iconic head of a red hawk dragon is angular, with a hardened, pointy upper jaw that almost looks like a fanged beak.
Red hawk dragons are born covered in thick, bright red down, which later transforms into large, red feathers. During the dragon’s juvenile years, scales start coming in, first covering critical locations, such as its chest and the brow ridges on its head. As it matures, the scales thicken and turn from a bright red to a reddish-brown, and the feathers turn dark red. By the time it reaches the young adult stage, most of the head is scaled except for a few decorative lines of feathers, and the chest and legs are completely scaled. The body is armored in several areas with large scales, leaving borders of small scales covered with feathers around the chest and down the back. The wings and tail stay fully feathered. This plumage has led to their alternate nickname of Feathered Dragons.
These dragons have only been seen around the Arm of the Immortals Peninsula. Whilst they can speak the language of the Ee'ar and Enduks, the only races with whom they are on regular speaking terms, they also speak their own racially distinct dialect of Draconic.
In combat, they rake with their hindclaws and bite, whilst also spewing gouts of flame. They're immune to fire, but vulnerable to cold.
Unusually for a dragon, red hawk dragons are incredibly social, to the point they live in fairly large communities of up to a dozen adults and their young (typically 1d3+1 hatchlings per mated pair) , and players will typically encounter 1d3 of them at a time. They even practice communal childcare after the first few years of their hatchling's lives. Red hawk dragon clans are typically found in large caves, or hidden mountain valleys; they primarily hunt the slopes and plateaus for large game animals, but may descend beyond the mountain on extended hunting sprees.
Red hawk dragons have no particular desire for wealth or power, though they do collect treasure. Proud of their lineage, they will suffer no affront to their collective dignity. They are the governing predator of their mountains, and any source of rivalry or impertinence is likely to find itself up against the entire community rather than just one dragon.
