The Society for Creative Anachronism is where white women go to LARP. It was founded in California in 1966, as you probably guessed. You probably didn't know that Poul Anderson was the founder, given how awesome his work is outside this.

Per sca.org, it holds itself as "pursuing research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century [Common-Era] skills, arts, combat and culture" focusing on Western Europe. "The SCA’s “Known World” is divided into twenty regions called kingdoms, and within the kingdoms there are hundreds of local SCA groups – Cantons, Shires, and Baronies." If all this sounds like the Renaissance Faire to you, then - yeah, the SCA are what do that.

Meet beautiful queens and gallant knights! - said nobody at a RenFaire. Meet tatted-up heavyset divorcees and effete wispy-bearded dorks. And overpriced turkey legs.

Two results of SCA seeping into Dungeons & Dragons are Jean Wells' B3: Palace of the Silver Princess and Jean Rabe's WG10: Child's Play, both awful and in need of major revision. Tom Moldvay was competent enough to fix B3 - which he did by rewriting it all. Skip Williams could do nothing with WG10.
