The Velschierre Troopers were a group of the Imperial Army that turned Traitor alongside their associated Legion, the Life Bringers, during the Heresy.

Background[edit]

Lying in the middle of the Ultima Segmentum, Velschierre was brought into the fold by the Life Bringers Legion in the late M30 in record time after only a few skirmishes fully displayed the massive difference between the military might of the Imperium and the Civilized World. Though it was virtually untouched by the Life Bringer's campaign, Velschierre would still be uplifted with the Legions generative technology which ushered in a new age of prosperity for the world. This would enable the Velschierre to rapidly set up an auxiliary force for the Twelfth Legion as well as fully arm and supply this new formation. The empathic and caring nature of Johannes Vrach would also earn him the undying loyalty of the Velschierre, a fact that would cause them to break with the Imperium during the Heresy.

Unique Organisation[edit]

The Velschierre value tactical flexibility and the versatility of its personnel above anything else, with those who take initiative and show ingenuity when dealing with the Velschierre's enemies as well as their clients rapidly rising through the ranks. To this end do the Velschierre incorporate Special Weapons and Heavy Weapons Teams into every ten-man squad. Cross-training between members of each squad is highly encouraged, not only to expand the squad's capabilities but also to thoroughly instill camaraderie among the men. The vast majority of the Troopers are also trained in first-aid, though that is more the influence of the Twelfth Legion than anything else. Veterans of the Velschierre are highly prized as instructors, being highly skilled in numerous disciplines as well as having experience in properly synergizing these disciplines to achieve results that are far greater than the sum of the individual skills.

Psykers are also highly valued by the Velschierre, to the point that they do not risk any of them on the frontlines. Instead, they are all trained in the Disciplines of Divination or Telepathy and are then divided into two Choirs based on their expertise. These two Choirs are then split up even further into Choruses and given over to the care of the Velschierre's colonels so that each of the Regimental Headquarters has a chorus of Divination and a chorus of Telepathy to advise them and to communicate and coordinate directly with the Companies and Troopers on the field.

Doctrine[edit]

In battle the Velschierre are a fluid, decentralized fighting force. The Regimental Commanders put forth strategies and outlines in how to achieve their objectives, and the various Company Command Squads interpret and discuss their portions of the overall plan before meeting with the Platoon leaders. However, As it is up to the individual squads themselves to realize these plans they are given exceptional leeway with their tactics and are for all intents and purposes entirely independent in their methods and techniques, with the strategies passed down from the brass acting mainly as a guideline of sorts. For all their individuality and independence the squads do keep in constant communication with each other to coordinate joint-attacks on large enemy groups, fortifications, and high-priority targets, but even then the Velschierre prefer to attack from multiple fronts at the same time rather than mass their forces and charge down the front.

Behavior[edit]

The Velschierre, despite their affiliations, strive to imitate their hero Johannes Vrach. However, squads often form cliques within the Troopers and rivalries of varying seriousness are fairly widespread among the Companies. While the more serious feuds are shut down as soon as they spring up by the officers, the more friendly competitions are actually encouraged as they help push each individual Trooper to be the best they can be. These occasional spats notwithstanding the Velschierre help and take care of their own, with Troopers ready and willing to sacrifice themselves for each other, though never for needless heroics. The sharing of jokes and stories among squads is a popular way to pass the time among the Velschierre, and being made fun of is generally accepted as the easiest way to know if one has been accepted by the group.

Wargear[edit]

The Velschierre are universally equipped with the Troll-pattern exosuit, a mass-produced, clunky powered exoskeleton which allows them to carry a large amount and variety of equipment, and gives them tremendous endurance as well as a great boost in speed. Due to their numerous contracts with various Xenos and the Dark Mechanicus a large amount of the Velschierre are able to arm and equip themselves with Xeno-tech and the Dark Mechanicus' techno-heretical experiments. Lower ranking Troopers who do not have experience with these esoteric weaponry generally arm themselves with much larger, more powerful analogues of various Lasgun patterns.

Homeworld[edit]

At the time of the Life Bringer's campaign Velschierre was reminiscent of ancient Terra in the 23'rd century, covered with sprawling cities and large urban environments. Though the planet was much more successful at surviving the Old Night than many others, it was suffering from increasingly more common and more severe natural disasters. The Life Bringers' uplifting generative technology combined with the sudden overflow of scientific discoveries as they were brought up to the technological level of the Imperium would not only fix these catastrophes and many other of the world's problems, but would also usher in an age of unparalleled prosperity for the planet. Drawing on this momentum, the world would stay in an upward spiral of achievement all the way up to the Heresy and following Scouring, whereupon Velschierre and all its inhabitants were destroyed by the Stone Men fleet.
