Summed up by Warbananon[edit]
The Wayward Sons, are a renegade chapter of Ultramarines Successors. They were assigned to protect a sub-sector, but found themselves corrupted by their charges. Disgusted by their heretical children, the Ultramarines took matters in their own hands and glassed the homeworld of the renegades, but failed to destroy the chapter. Enraged, the Wayward Sons abandoned their former alliegance, took up worship of Chaos and an unknown God, and declared their intent to destroy the Emperor and all that he has created. They spent the next millenium or so nursing their wounds, adopting new tactics and bolstering their numbers with the aid of a few smaller warbands they absorbed. In time, they became a massive host of nocturnal hunters, sneaking upon their enemies and striking them at their weakest moment to inflict maximum damage and terror. To this end, they use the massive sandworms of their homeworld to burrow tunnels leading to the weakpoints of their enemies. They are not alone in their endeavours, they also have the aid of a like-minded warband and an unknown xenos race. They have also often come into conflict with the Night Wolves, arrogantly seeing them as weaklings and bearlovers who hide in their trenches like cowards.
