The '''Grandfather Plaque''' is a unique kind of [[construct]] from the obscure monster lore regions of [[Dungeons & Dragons]]. Considered a kind of [[gargoyle]], it is an ornamental plaque stylized to appear as a face (usually human, sometimes animal) which has been imbued with magical sentience to serve as an unflinching doorsman, capable of communicating with visitors and, in a pinch, fighting off intruders with blasts of magic. It first appeared in [[Advanced Dungeons & Dragons]] 2nd edition, as a [[gargoyle]] variant featured in issue #223 of [[Dragon Magazine]], and was then made official by being printed in the Monstrous Compendium Appendix Annual Volume 3. It was updated to 3rd edition in Dragon Compendium, and has since fallen below the radar.
