The Grandfather Plaque is a unique kind of construct from the obscure monster lore regions of Dungeons & Dragons. Considered a kind of gargoyle, it is an ornamental plaque stylized to appear as a face (usually human, sometimes animal) which has been imbued with magical sentience to serve as an unflinching doorsman, capable of communicating with visitors and, in a pinch, fighting off intruders with blasts of magic. It first appeared in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition, as a gargoyle variant featured in issue #223 of Dragon Magazine, and was then made official by being printed in the Monstrous Compendium Appendix Annual Volume 3. It was updated to 3rd edition in Dragon Compendium, and has since fallen below the radar.
