The Emperor’s Praetorian are unlike any other Astartes because they are the only group that still uses a gene seed from a Traitor Primarch. After the death of Horus and the institutionalization of chapters in place of legions a small group of Astartes from the Emperor’s Children still fiercely loyal to the Emperor avoided the consolidation of the remaining loyalist legions. This was simultaneously a death oath and a chance at redemption allowed by Primarch Guilliman because he hoped to somehow save his lost brother Fulgrim. The Emperor’s Praetorian took up the greatest death oath, to find their lost Primarch and return his soul to the Emperor. Many psykers and Astartes believe that to save Fulgrim they must recover the Blade of Laer. Grand-Librarian Gaius Varus and those before him believe that they can remove the warp taint on Fulgrim’s soul and imprison it within the sword. That however, is only half of the problem. Legend also suggests that Fulgrim’s soul is trapped within the demon-warped painting belived to have been created by Serena D'Angelus. Thus the Praetorians have vowed to bring war upon the Eye of Terror until both artifacts are returned and their legion is redeemed in the eyes of the Emperor. The Praetorians are limited (Officially) to 480 Astartes at any given time which are made up of six centuriae of eighty men each. They are formed into a Cohort rather than a chapter and follow the practices of an old empire on earth that fell thousands of years before the Age of Strife. Each centuriae are led by a single Centurion and a Librarian. The Librarian takes the place of the sergeant within the centuriae as senior leadership. The cohort also has a Cohort Sergeant and a Cohort Chaplain which are directly under the Triumvirate. Recruitment of Astartes is restricted (Officially) to the Sol system, a precaution against possible warp taint. Also unique to the Praetorians is their leadership caste. A triumvirate was created to maintain balance within the cohort. Fear of corruption forced the cohort to maintain a balance of leadership in case one would ever fall to the temptations of the warp, this way the Astartes cohort is unable to follow the corrupted path in which its legion did during the Horus Hersey. The triumvirate consists of two Praetorian Prefects and the Centurion of the First Centuriae, known as the Primus pilus. The Prefects are chosen by vote in which the six Centurions and Librarians cast. Most often the 1st Centurion will rise to rank of Prefect and his role is replaced by the next most senior Astartes. Each member of the Triumvirate must pass a test of purity conducted by the Cohort Chaplain before assuming command. The Cohort does not have a home world nor does it protect a system of its own. Their soul task is to redeem their Legion and Primarch. Their Fortress Monastery, Castra Praetoria, is equal to the Imperial Fists, Phalanx in size and fire power. Although the Cohort is limited (Officially) to 480 Astartes the Castra carries fifteen regiments of Imperial Guard and a host of various Astartes from chapters that have pledged their acceptance to the Praetorian Death Oath. This also includes Sisters of Battle, Mechanicus and dozens of worlds which the Praetorians may recruit their IG from.
