{{Infobox Spess Mahreen Chapter
In ages long since past, the Bulwark were upheld as some of the mightiest of the Emperor's Angels; a specialized Division of Hektor's Legion, they were masters of the arts of siege. Led by Sebastion Rex, they acted as consultants to many Legions, assisting in operations where their skills may be put to proper use. Where some rushed ahead for glory and honor, the Bulwark fortified and subdued; where others pacified planets and moved on, the Bulwark enacted strict "re-processing" programs on any planet they claimed. Their defensive nature was their eventual downfall, however, as they ended up on the losing side of the Heresy and were soon driven into oblivion by the rebounding Loyalist forces.

Summary of Legion XXVIII
Allegiance: Unaligned
Something of a rarity, the Bulwark remained fairly neutral during the Heresy due to their remote and less aggressive stance.
Main Focus; Siege Warfare and Empire Management

During the Great Crusade, the Bulwark was used to bolster the defenses of any planets that weren't currently a warzone; after conquering a planet, the Bulwark would leave behind a garrison to keep watch over the planet instead of another Legion wasting its potential resources doing so. Due to this, the Bulwark Legion didn't see action nearly as often as other Legions.
After the recruitment rates of the Heralds began to reach unprecedented numbers, Hektor himself elected his Equerry to create and lead a Division within the Legion. This Division would focus on the defensive, offering forward operating bases to the Heralds and other Legions in kind.
Legion Tactics
Each chapter sized division of the Bulwark is called a 'Bastion' and is given their own world to maintain and fortify. Each Bastion supports the other Bastions near it by using traditional transport, but each also can function independently of any over-arching command structure. The Command Structure is referred to as the 'Keep' as well as having the traditional Chaplains, Librarians, Techmarines, and Apothecaries.

On the offensive the Bulwark have limitless patience. Once an LZ has been cleared by the Vanguard, pre-fabricated fortresses and other defenses are brought in from orbit. Slowly expanding out from a central beachhead, the Bulwark's fortresses will continue to grow in number until a good portion of the planet is covered entirely by them. At this point, the Bulwark need only wait for their enemies to assault their defenses and summarily be shattered upon them. However, if this tactic does not work, bribes may be offered to key members of the resistance in return for their cooperation. As a third and final option, all areas outside of the control of that planet's Bastion will be devastated via mass missile and artillery barrages. As this wastes valuable resources, this option is only used in dire or rushed circumstances.
Dubbed the Gatekeepers, the new Division was used to bolster the defenses of any planets that weren't currently a warzone; after conquering a planet, they would leave behind a garrison to keep watch over the planet instead of another Legion wasting its potential resources doing so. Due to this, the Division didn't see action nearly as often as their brethren.

Patience.
Space Marines, the transhuman demigods; Despite being the Emperor's Angels of Death and the harbingers of humanity's victory across the galaxy, they often lack the simple human capacity for patience. A raging horde of cannibals who seeks their prey, a mechanized legion of assault tanks, an airborne strike force of assault marines; all focused on bringing the fight to their enemies, striking while the iron is hot, and grinding their foes into the dirt. These tactics result in a swift victory and a captured planet.

Pre-fab Fortresses;
But what about afterwards? How many lives are lost to ensure one planet is taken? How high is the probability that the planet will revolt soon after? Statistical probability dictates that for every 5 planets conquered by force, at least one will revolt within a century period. For every planet risen in revolt, others will join the cause at the site of the Imperium's weakness. Despite the initial speed of the conquest of the system and its planets, resources are wasted by rushing and by further pacification in the future.

Ever careful and calculating, the Gatekeepers Division was known for taking their time in their conquests, minimizing losses, and pacifying the populations through extensive re-processing programs. These programs were thorough and shown to be effective, with nearly a 78% survival rate among participants. As an alternative to re-processing, the Gatekeepers also offered citizens the opportunity to join the personal militia of the Gatekeepers; this militia had an estimated 14% survival rate within the first dozen years of service. Any dissidents who refused either option were forced to become servitors; simply eliminating them would be a waste of resources.

Division Colors
"Slate! This colour is as the unyielding bedrock that we form as brethren!

Mahogany! This colour reminds us of where we come from and what we fight for!

Silver! This colour is as the walls of our great fortresses!

Let our colours be pillars in the dark tides of space!"

After their birth as a Division, the Gatekeepers adopted their own colour scheme while still paying some form of homage to their elite status within the Legion. A dull and fairly basic colour scheme chosen by Sebastion, it proved to be easy to maintain and could sometimes act as camouflage in desert or urban environments.

Notable Legionnaires
Members of the Inner Wall, Towers of the Bastions
Believing in ruling from an administrative position of power and delegation, Sebastion elected his most experienced and loyal Lieutenants to act as Towers to his new Division; each Tower would lead a Battalion consisting of 3 Chapters, or 3,000 Marines. These Towers would become known as the Inner Wall of the Gatekeepers; the last defense to be breached, and the strongest members of the Division.

*Arch Forfender Chien
- Largest of the Gatekeepers' Towers and Tower of the Defensive Branch, Chien rarely spoke, but when he did, his commands were heeded without hesitation. A father figure to his men, Chien can be considered kind by Space Marine standards, often attempting to ensure his men follow the safest plans and carry the best suited gear for the situation. Often in charge of field operations, Chien was known to work closely with Tower Quillo due to the Defensive Division having the highest demand for supplies. Chien was strongly bonded to all of his close brethren from the Inner Wall, but none moreso than Quillo. A firm believer in leading his men from the front, Chien would often pilot a pivotal Node or primary fortress to the surface in order to ensure his men had the highest chance of survival and could benefit from his leadership. As a kind and compassionate man, Chien took Arkemidea's betrayal the hardest, only being further exacerbated after losing Quillo, one of his closest friends in the Division. After that, Chien no longer laughed or smiled, as he had before. He threw himself into battle, any semblance of control or strategy long passed. Soon after, Chien gave his life to defend his Highcastle from what would have been a fatal blast from an enemy Multi-melta during the final battle of the Crucible.

*Arch Artillerist Yakobus
- Tower of Munitions Branch
Survived to join the Ramparts

*Arch Quartermaster Quillo
In charge of resource management, Quillo considered his job to be one of the most important within the Division, despite his brethren often looking down on him. Tower of the Supply Branch, Quillo ensured that all Bastions were properly outfitted and supplied before, during, and after every campaign. A genius with numbers, it was very rare for Quillo to make even a trivial clerical error. However, he could not have predicted the betrayal of Tower Arkemidea; Quillo was the first to lose his life in the carnage wrought by Dz'larhonz.

*Arch Confessor Rivela
A devout follower of the Imperial Truth, Rivela is a man steeped in tradition and mysticism. He was often found inspecting the other Bastions for any inkling of heresy in its many forms; this lead to his Bastion specializing in an inquisitorial branch of information acquisition. This usually involved recon missions before a beachhead was formed on a planet, but it also held a dark secret. Any prisoners or heretics acquired by the Gatekeepers during the Great Crusade were given to Rivela. It was not a rare occasion for heretics from other Legions to end up being turned over to Rivela for "re-processing." None who entered Rivela's flagship, known as the Devout Servitude, were ever seen outside it again, but the 85% accuracy of the information sent out from it spoke for itself.

*Arch Examiner Giuseppe
- Tower of Recruitment/Training Branch

*Arch Magister of the Inner Wall Callisto Arkemidea, First to Lead
What would normally be a logistical nightmare is counterbalanced by Arch Magister Callisto Arkemidea, Tower of the Management Battalion. As every Tower had a specialized role, Arkemidea made sure that each Bastion properly meshed with each of its brother Bastions in order to achieve optimal operational performance. However, his pivotal role within the Legion eventually lead to his downfall; ensorceled by the Dark Powers after an encounter with a daemonic artefact, his lust for power lead to his summoning of a Greater Daemon within the chambers of the Inner Wall on Arelon.

*Arch Strategist Giacomo
Always overly critical of himself and his plans, Giacomo was nonetheless one of the most experienced and knowledgeable members of the Gatekeepers during the Great Crusade. Often working alongside Tower Arkemidea, Giacomo's strategic prowess was the primary reason the Gatekeepers Division was often deployed in the most tactically sound and easily defensible areas during deployments. Despite this, he would often berate himself for any loss of Marines that could have been prevented in hindsight. He was known to have created a shrine within his personal quarters; by the time of the Heresy, there was said to have been tens of thousands of candles present, yet they were all well-kept and lit at all times. Presumed to have been lost into the Warp with his Primarch after the final battle of the Crucible.

*Arch Constructor Xingjian
- Tower of Manufactorum Branch

*Arch Navarch Albimare
- Tower of Naval Branch

*Arch Adjudicator Serbat
More machine than man, Serbat was known to have replaced at least 65% of his body with cybernetics by the time the Unification Wars had ended due to his disregard for his own safety. A rather brash and eccentric man, Serbat lead many tank charges against the Imperium's enemies during the Great Crusade. Serbat's resolute indestructibility become a running joke within the Legion as officers often said in jest that it was easier to kill a Primarch than Serbat. Fortunately, this was not entirely untrue. During one pivotal battle of the Great Crusade, Serbat's Fellblade suffered a mortal blow to its generator and exploded, flinging him in 2 or 3 different directions. However, the Legion was able to save what little of him remained and he was interned within a mighty Contemptor Dreadnought for the duration of the Crusade.

Division Tactics
On the offensive, the Bulwark mimics the mighty glacier; sequestering themselves within gigantic landships which are then used as forward operating bases for the Heralds or the Legion to which the Palisade is currently attached. These landships house refueling stations, barracks, ammunition depots, and in some cases, small factories, allowing them to serve a multitude of roles depending on the situation. These landships trade speed for armor, meaning that advances are usually painfully slow, but efficient with low casualty rates.

Hades Breaching Drills;
Due to the nature of these crawling advances, flanking maneuvers are often quickly adopted by the enemies of the Bulwark. These often prove to be foolish, however, as the herd-like nature of the landships means that every landship is covered by at least two others; interlacing crossfires make quick work of flanking enemy groups.

Moles;
Though the Division is seldom deployed to such planets, water-covered worlds or worlds with mountainous terrain do not impede the march of the landships; multiple, specialized models of the landship exist within the Division, allowing them to prepare and circumvent the natural terrain advantages that many opposing forces depend on.

The Coming of The Emperor
Serious, driven, and dour, the Gatekeepers are fierce defenders who value personal toughness and stubbornness. Any conquered planet is seen as a valuable resource to the Imperium of man, but not so much that excess Astartes lives should be shed taking it. Due to this, the Bulwark almost seem paradoxical; they seek to preserve a planet and its resources, but would rather destroy the majority of a planet than lose a company of Marines.

Then, on a world named Arelon the legion found its lost Primarch, Sebastian Rex. Sebastian had been found in the forests, and had been looked after by the populace of a small city, constantly predated on by roaming bandit armies and the neighbouring nations and Great Cities. Over the course of his time on Arelon, Sebastian managed to take that small city, and turn it into a sprawling empire, the Jewel and capital city of all of Arelon. He had done this by meticulously, and patiently, fortifying the small city state and all of its conquests and the infrastructure linking them, so that they made an interlocking, interlinked web of citadels that protected each other and their cities. At first Sebastian would not listen to the Emperor, believing the Emperor to be a bigger, space-faring foe like he had faced on Arelon, one that he and his people would weather like a storm.
Outside of the battlefield, the Marines of the Bulwark are a stoic and self-reflective sort, often spending large amounts of time in solitude and meditation to contemplate their true nature and contribution to the Division. Glory on the battlefield as seen as a waste of time and life, and honour is only to be kept when the situation warrants it. Honour duels in regards to issues of great consequence are not unheard of between peers, but far more prevalent is the participation in a periodical contest of skill between squads within a Bunker.

The Emperor ordered the Silver Cataphracts and the Steel Marshalls to use their siege expertise to force Sebastian out. They did so with ease, although the defenses did give them far more trouble than they expected, their advanced weaponry and tactics reduced the defenses to rubble. Seeing his empire, all he had built in ruins, Sebastian wept, but he remained steadfast, standing in front of the main gatehouse to the capital, that was still just about intact, and challenged his foes to duel him. He fought off many foes, fighting for hours on end, sustaining great wounds but shrugging them all off. Bloody and beginning to tire, Sebastian finally challenged the emperor himself to duel him as his final gambit.
These contests often involved precision riflework, feats of natural fighting ability, and ceremonial stun-sword duels. The victors of these contests would be celebrated by his peers and entered into the annals of history; to counteract this supposed honor, however, the victor was also obligated to become an instructor for the recruitment and training of Neophyte Marines. An instructor may only return to duty after one of his peers has defeated him in one-on-one combat.

The Emperor did not accept the duel, but chose to speak with Sebastian, explaining why he had come, and what Sebastians destiny was; to fortify the stars in the name of his father, the Emperor. Sebastian accepted this, agreeing to do his best for his father, but the seeds of resentment were already sown in his soul. His legion, renamed the Gatekeepers after their Sebastians heroic last stand on Arelon, now followed the Great Crusade, reinforcing and garrisoning strategic positions - using what he learned at the hands of the Cataphracts and the Marshalls to good use, and together with advanced technology, began perfecting the art of siege defense.
Division Organisation
The Great Crusade
"Is the mighty mountain composed of a single stone? Are walls built of single bricks? Nay, brethren, and nor shall we ever be alone."
As the Great Crusade progressed, Sebastian began carving out his own network of highly defended, incredibly fortified planets, and steadily expanded this burgeoning empire until he had a prosperous sector under his control, benefiting from the regular patrols and heavy defenses, the sector economy became robust, constantly growing to keep up with the demand for construction materials and defensive weapons and space ships soared. He made friends with Arelex of the War Scribes, and Uriel Starikov of the Children of Armok.

As his empire grew and strengthened, Sebastian, and the Gatekeepers involvement in the crusades waned. And by the time the Heresy began, it had been some time since Sebastian and his legion had done more than fortify and defend against xenos attacks. Not knowing who to side with, and remembering the pain he felt at having his mightiest achievement reduced to rubble by the Emperor, Sebastian declared his neutrality, taking his now considerable personal empire with him.
An excerpt from Sebastion Rex's first speech to his Division before their maiden voyage

The Heresy
After their creation as a separate Division within the Heralds, the Gatekeepers formed their own organization system to better suit their tactics. While formerly each Chapter had been a well rounded force, Sebastion deconstructed the traditional organizational system in favour of grouping 3 Chapters together into what would be called a Bastion, with each being specialized in its purpose.
As the Heresy raged, Sebastian was contacted by Uriel Starikov of the Children of Armok, and warned that his legions rivals, the Silver Cataphracts, and the Steel Marshals were en-route to his empire to force him to join them, as they had done back on Arelon. Images of his sector spanning empire reduces to rubble and glass like his first empire enraged Sebastian, and he began preparations to welcome his former brothers with concrete and steel. As one final insult to his oncoming foes, he sent a personal message to their Primarchs.

"You will now know us as the Bulwark. For we will break you upon our mighty defenses and laugh at your death. You will be destroyed in the Crucible I lay before you, but take solace knowing that we will forge your remains into new walls to crush all those who follow in your ill-fated footsteps. We are the Bulwark. Bring us your best. For we will take them all!"
Each of the Towers, as they were now entitled, kept their command center aboard their prospective capital ship within the primary fleet. From this launching point, mixed forces from each of the 10 Bastions, formed from around 3,000 Space Marines, intermingled to form what was referred to as a Palisade, or mixed fighting force. Each Palisade, usually consisting of around 10,000 Space Marines, was then broken down into Bunkers of 1000 Marines and 20-50 armoured units, with each of these Bunkers being broken down into 2 groups; Anchors and Grapples. Anchors acted as the defensive force that protected the landship and any captured real estate from enemy assault, while the Grapples slowly set footholds into enemy territory in order to expand their own borders.

Little did Sebastian know that the the two loyalist legions had been dispatched to provide assistance to the Bulwark, as Sebastians little corner of the Imperium was perhaps the safest and most secure loyalist sector in the whole galaxy. The Loyalists had planned to use it as a base for a second front, to lure the Traitors into the masterfully crafted defenses of the Bulwark Empire or attack them from behind if they marched on Terra. The Crucible Challenge came as a shock, but assuming the Bulwarks message to mean they had joined Hektors side, the Cataphtacts and the Marshals did not hesitate in preparing for battle.
During the Great Crusade, the Gatekeepers barely, if ever, split their Division into separate Bastions, instead preferring to have a large primary fleet and send Palisades on sorties into enemy space. In this way, though they lost a degree of their flexibility and reaction time, every battle the Gatekeepers fought would be fought well-supported and even better supplied. Reinforcements were never far away and supply lines were well-protected, and allies could be given needed respite. Floating shipyards were towed behind the great procession, allowing minor to medium refits when needed.

The Crucible itself was made up of 4 worlds and 2 space stations, all garrisoned and fortified beyond normal necessity or logic. They were dug in for a long, bloody siege. The Crucible would last the rest of the heresy, and outmatch the Siege of Terra in scale and brutality. Ultimately, the Crucible would leave the Bulwark victorious, but having sustained heavy losses themselves, losing around 55% of their legion. The Cataphracts and the Marshals suffer an estimated 65% and 52% casualty rate respectively. Towards the end of the battle, seeing him in person, Sebastian challenged the Marshalls Primarch, Roman Albrecht to single combat. Roman was a far superior fighter, and lead the fight, but Sebastian's skill at defending kept the duel locked into a stalemate. As both Primarch's anger and desire to best their rival took over them, they began to ignore the battle that had temporarily lulled to watch the two giants duel. Finally, Sebastian struck; parrying a sword stroke, he disarmed Roman, and gave him no respite - not even stopping to gloat. Roman's head flew, and the silence that followed it was deafening. A Primarch, the mightiest of the mighty, save the Emperor of mankind himself, was dead. Before the head of Roman had even hit the floor, the carnage resumed at a higher force than before - deafening cheers from the Bulwark, and cries of anguish and sorrow fueled rage from the Marhsals. Sebastian stood, sword in the air, relishing in the feeling - he had bested one of the 2 mortals responsible for his people, his empire back on Arelon, being destroyed. The feeling did not last long. He had suffered some minor wounds during the fight, but they had weakened him, and he returned to his fortified battle lines. Later in the battle, Sebastian would face the Cataphracts Primarch Constantine while defending a breach in the curtain wall of the capital of the 4th and final world. Constantine was not as close a match for Sebastian as Roman was, but due to Sebastians wounds, Constantine was able to get the upper hand, and mortally wounded Sebastian with a powerful strike from his master-crafted power halberd. Before he succumbed to his wound however, Sebastian grabbed the halberds shaft, and pulled himself down the blade, so he was face to face with his rival brother, nothing but hatred on Sebastians face, but a look of remorse on the face of Constantine. Sebastian tried to say something, and Constantine leant in to hear his brothers last words over the din of battle. "Bring us your best, for we will take them all." He trailed off into laughter, that quickly became a coughing fit as blood poured out of his lips. His lips that smiled. Constantine looked confused, then was engulfed in an explosion that sent all those in a 30 radius flying. Constantine was not dead, but he was no longer conscious; the blast had ripped his lower body clean from the rest of him, and hurled his upper body up, and into the rubble of an outer wall. The apothecaries were able to keep him alive miraculously, but Constantine Komnemnos was in a deep coma, and would never be the same again.
Division Fleet
Post-Heresy
Sebastion's focus on preserving his Division and its members as long as was possible lead to a doctrine of every Bastion supporting each other, and this extended to the fleet; by the end of the Great Crusade and into the beginning stages of the Crucible, over 48% of the Division's fleet was composed of ships that had been in service since the inception of the Division or longer, as some were carried over from pre-Division status. Arelon's many Industrial Worlds contributed to this; Sebastion personally oversaw the modification of his Legion's battleships and Battle Barges to support more advanced Void Shield technology and thicker armour. To retain the size and format of each Battleship, any weapons that required their own energy source to power them were removed, and their power sources were re-diverted to the newly improved Void Shields. Though this often put the Legion at a disadvantage due to their reliance on solid-slug and mass driver technology, the survivability of the fleet was welcomed as an even trade.

Following the aftermath of the Crucible, and the now finished Heresy, the Bulwark return to their original business of building their Empire out on the fringes of the galaxy, and focus on rebuilding their decimated legion, which they do reasonably faster than most, due to their Empires strong economy, and all the gene-seed they could recover and steal from the dead at the Crucible.

They keep true to their promise and have their old fortifications rebuilt using the smelted down and crushed remains of their foes. Roman Albrecht's dead body is sealed in plas-glass, normally used for void windows, and sent to their fortress monastery, where his body watches over the main gate, a testament to all who would try and siege the Bulwark.
*Force of Will (Gloriana Class Flagship)

Received as a parting gift from the Heralds, the flagship of the Division, a Gloriana class battleship dubbed Force of Will, was modified heavily, as is usual tradition amongst the Legions. In particular, it possessed no primary weapons other than the enormous mass driver that ran through the ship from stem to stern; dubbed The Persuader by Sebastion himself, its primary purpose was to destroy a single planet within a system, thus hopefully driving the rest of the system to surrender. An adamantium slug would be launched into the heart of the planet, causing mass disruption and eventual destruction. The threat of firing it was often enough to cause mass surrender in rebellious systems.

Shattered after the Crucible, the Bulwark split into two factions known as the Ramparts and the Rubble.
Rumours abound that in times of dire need, the flagship could even detonate the sun within a system, causing a super-nova and obliterating any tactical usefulness the system may have once possessed. Of course, these are merely rumours, as logic dictates that the flagship would need to be far too close to the sun to accurately detonate it; it would likely be caught in the blast along with the dying system.

The Ramparts
This painfully specialized system also prevented the flagship from being of any real value during void battles, relegating it to a rear-line command center and occasional fire-support platform.

Chapter History
Magnificent Terminator (Apocalypse Class)
The mighty empire of the Bulwark had fallen. Shattered by the combined forces of the Silver Cataphracts and the Steel Marshals, the Bulwark never quite recovered. After the Heresy had run its course, the empire rose again, but it wasn't quite the same. Some planets seceded from the union and the vastly undermanned Bulwark simply could not stop them. Without their Primarch, they could not continue to expand their borders and prosper, as they had before. Instead, they fought every day simply to retain a semblance of their once sprawling empire.

Sebastian's last great act as Primarch had been to hollow out one of the moons of Arelon to form an impregnable fortress of rock and ambition. During the events of the Crucible, Sebastian ordered the entire 1st Bastion into the fortress, which came to be known as "The Folly of Rex" or simply "The Folly." Seeing this act as cowardly, many officers stayed on the battlefield and died with their Primarch. However, the captain of the 1st Bastion, whose name has been lost in the annals of history, was one of the few who chose to enter The Folly.
Hand of Wrath (Apocalypse Class)

Emerging days later to scenes of devastation, the captain and the remains of his company wept bitter tears for the loss of their brethren. It took several weeks to merely collect the gene-seed of their fallen allies and enemies. During this time, the remains of the Bulwark splintered into factions; some wanted to leave to find their own path, some to surrender to the Loyalists, and others to side with the Traitors. The captain of the 1st company, the most trusted associated of his Primarch, only sought one thing; to build his own empire upon the ashes of the last. Seeing no other course of action, the captain assumed the title of Keep and took as new name; Indomitus. Indomitus would go on to become Emperor of a new empire as his forces reconquered worlds that had once been under their control.
Vigilant Destroyer (Apocalypse Class)

The Bulwark had failed. Its mighty defenses had been breached and its mighty leader slain. Seeking to distance his empire from that of his failed predecessor, Indomitus renamed his Legion; they were now to be known as the Ramparts, the mighty crowns upon the towers of order.

Chapter Combat Doctrine
The Usual Suspect

"The only way to ensure victory is to eliminate resistance." - Indomitus, Keep of the Ramparts
Defilade of Arelon

While the Ramparts practice a combat doctrine very similar to that of their Founders, they differ in that instead of focusing on attrition-based siege warfare, the Ramparts focus on artillery barrages to conquer worlds.
Tower of Might
Via orbital bombardment, the Ramparts clear an LZ for their pre-fabricated fortresses to touch down.

If the enemy has a stranglehold on the space around a planet, specialty fortresses come to the fore; akin to Kharybdis drop pod but the size of a Storm Eagle, these towers are dropped from orbit in groups of 3-5. Each tower, called a Node, houses a squad of 8-12 Marines.
Gateway of The Rex

Each Node possesses a modular defense system that can be configured with various different heavy weapons, such as heavy bolters or plasma cannons.
Alonzarius
Once at least 3 Nodes have touched down, void shields are transmitted between them, creating an isolated section of enemy real estate.

Pointing their weapons inward, the squads would then clear a beachhead within their void shields. Once several of these beachheads have been made, their void shields would be linked to create a much larger staging area for the rest of the occupation force to land.

Once this LZ has been established, the artillery barrages begin. Battery after battery of Manticore Missile Platforms and Earthshaker Cannons bombard the area around the LZ, clearing a path between Node groups in order to further reinforce their positions. Any assaults upon the Node forts are repulsed with heavy weapons fire; the Ramparts need never step foot outside their defence lines.
Battle Barges of the Bulwark were usually not used in primary assault formations, instead acting as interference against enemy Strike Cruisers and support craft for the primary landing shuttles of planetary invasions.
Eventually, these Node forts will encompass large portions of the combat zone. Instead of attacking their enemies, the Ramparts will simply continue to launch Nodes further and further into enemy territory until there is nothing left.

Resistance is met with overwhelming force; unlike other forces who must use their supplies wisely, the supply lines of the Ramparts extend however far they need to, ensuring they never run out of ammunition or other supplies. In this way, while a barrage of Deathstrike missiles would likely be sufficient against a major hive city, the Ramparts might issue two or three of said barrages to completely devastate it.
*Strike Cruisers:

However, no evidence of this mass destruction is ever left behind; due to the thriving empire at the heart of the Ramparts, they export populaces as others might products. Transplanting a populace that is already loyal to them, the Ramparts effectively instantly colonize a world with pre-fabricated, self-sustaining cities that will eventually expand into the planet beyond. In this way, instead of spending years colonizing planets, then fortifying them, the Ramparts form Fortresses from each of their conquests; what was once an offensive defense is now a defensive offense.
The Bulwark fielded around 5 Strike Cruisers per Battleship, so their numbers tended to number in the lower hundreds. Their primary purpose was to run interference to the larger ships; they were seldom used for ground assaults, leaving that to the Battle Barges, instead.

Like their predecessors, the Marines of the Ramparts are stout and solid, favouring heavier armour than Space Marines usually opt for. Clad in sandstone and slate coloured power armour, the Ramparts have shattered all aquilas upon their armor, declaring their secession from the Imperium.

Forming the epicenter of the Bulwark's activities and that of its successors, the Arelon system is a small system of only a dozen planets. However, each planet plays a part in the larger warmachine that is the Bulwark.
The Rubble, being a conglomerate of warbands barely unified at all, have a small fleet of starships at their disposal. The Palazzo, the last remaining Battle Barge after the Crucible, functions as their de facto headquarters.

Chapter Appearance
Some worlds are only inhabited by skeleton populations that crew the massive Manufactorums that span the planet, while others function as Agri-world to produce all manner of sustenance. These supplies are kept in-system for Arelon's workers due to their high demand, but this is balanced out due to the fact that Arelon's Manufactorums and shipyards contribute over 75% of their production to the Imperial War effort.
The tattered remains of the Bulwark have donned light brown and dark slate armour since their defeat.

The native Xenos were purged by the human colonists long before the Heralds arrived, leaving any resources ripe for Imperial exploitation. This means that freelancers often come from other Segmenta to work the fields or mines.

"Bring us your best, for we will take them all."

Summary of 2nd Division[edit | edit source]

Numeration: The 2nd Division of the I Legion

Primogenator: Hektor Cincinnatus

Observed Strategic Tendencies: Siege Warfare, Expansion and Occupation Operations

Noteworthy Domains: The Arelon system and various smaller sectors within the Empire

Allegiance: Unaligned

After the recruitment rates of the Heralds began to reach unprecedented numbers, Hektor himself elected his Equerry to create and lead a Division within the Legion. This Division would focus on the defensive, offering forward operating bases to the Heralds and other Legions in kind.

Division Colors[edit | edit source]

Notable Legionnaires[edit | edit source]

Members of the Inner Wall, Towers of the Bastions[edit | edit source]

Believing in ruling from an administrative position of power and delegation, Sebastion elected his most experienced and loyal Lieutenants to act as Towers to his new Division; each Tower would lead a Battalion consisting of 3 Chapters, or 3,000 Marines. These Towers would become known as the Inner Wall of the Gatekeepers; the last defense to be breached, and the strongest members of the Division.

 • Arch Forfender Chien

 • Arch Artillerist Yakobus

- Tower of Munitions Branch Survived to join the Ramparts

 • Arch Quartermaster Quillo

In charge of resource management, Quillo considered his job to be one of the most important within the Division, despite his brethren often looking down on him. Tower of the Supply Branch, Quillo ensured that all Bastions were properly outfitted and supplied before, during, and after every campaign. A genius with numbers, it was very rare for Quillo to make even a trivial clerical error. However, he could not have predicted the betrayal of Tower Arkemidea; Quillo was the first to lose his life in the carnage wrought by Dz'larhonz.

 • Arch Confessor Rivela

 • Arch Examiner Giuseppe

- Tower of Recruitment/Training Branch

 • Arch Magister of the Inner Wall Callisto Arkemidea, First to Lead

What would normally be a logistical nightmare is counterbalanced by Arch Magister Callisto Arkemidea, Tower of the Management Battalion. As every Tower had a specialized role, Arkemidea made sure that each Bastion properly meshed with each of its brother Bastions in order to achieve optimal operational performance. However, his pivotal role within the Legion eventually lead to his downfall; ensorceled by the Dark Powers after an encounter with a daemonic artefact, his lust for power lead to his summoning of a Greater Daemon within the chambers of the Inner Wall on Arelon.

 • Arch Strategist Giacomo

 • Arch Constructor Xingjian

- Tower of Manufactorum Branch

 • Arch Navarch Albimare

- Tower of Naval Branch

 • Arch Adjudicator Serbat

Division Tactics[edit | edit source]

On the offensive, the Bulwark mimics the mighty glacier; sequestering themselves within gigantic landships which are then used as forward operating bases for the Heralds or the Legion to which the Palisade is currently attached. These landships house refueling stations, barracks, ammunition depots, and in some cases, small factories, allowing them to serve a multitude of roles depending on the situation. These landships trade speed for armor, meaning that advances are usually painfully slow, but efficient with low casualty rates.

Though the Division is seldom deployed to such planets, water-covered worlds or worlds with mountainous terrain do not impede the march of the landships; multiple, specialized models of the landship exist within the Division, allowing them to prepare and circumvent the natural terrain advantages that many opposing forces depend on.

Division Culture[edit | edit source]

WIP

Serious, driven, and dour, the Gatekeepers are fierce defenders who value personal toughness and stubbornness. Any conquered planet is seen as a valuable resource to the Imperium of man, but not so much that excess Astartes lives should be shed taking it. Due to this, the Bulwark almost seem paradoxical; they seek to preserve a planet and its resources, but would rather destroy the majority of a planet than lose a company of Marines.

Division Organisation[edit | edit source]

"Is the mighty mountain composed of a single stone? Are walls built of single bricks? Nay, brethren, and nor shall we ever be alone."

An excerpt from Sebastion Rex's first speech to his Division before their maiden voyage

Division Fleet[edit | edit source]

 • Force of Will (Gloriana Class Flagship)

This painfully specialized system also prevented the flagship from being of any real value during void battles, relegating it to a rear-line command center and occasional fire-support platform.
