Karen Traviss is an author that has wrote books for both Star Wars and Halo, she is widely regarded as Matt Ward with tits so you would know what is going to come next. Mentioning and praising her name towards the Warsies and Haloites would create much Rage and your chances of being shanked by a lightsaber or energy sword prop is quite high. You have been warned.
Why is she so hated?
For the simple fact that she doesn't do her research, retconns things just to fit her ideas on whats 'best' in the setting, destroying beloved characters because she doesn't like their ideas, making respectable characters into blatant Supermen and openly insults anyone who criticizes her, comparing them to the Taliban. Should be noted Karen Travis is WORSE than Ward as unlike Ward's over exaggerating things already there, her retconns is often seen with petty malice rather than plain ignorance. She also derails the plot in order to rant about how much things she likes are awesome or how much things she doesn't like suck. And is a total hypocrite, the reason why she quit Star Wars? The writers of the Clone Wars 3d show had Mandalorians that didn't match with her views. She is so bad that she makes the writing styles of Matt Ward and C.S.Goto look like Dan Abnett and Greg Bear; Yes. She. Is. That. Bad.

Star Wars
When fans of Star Wars first heard that Karen Traviss was writing novels based on their beloved franchise, most was naively welcoming as her first books based on the well liked Republic Commando series was praised as being interesting and deep. But that was just the beginning of her notoriety of clear bias towards all things non Mandalorians/Clone Troopers and is also the beginning of her rampant hate boner for the Jedis. With Star Wars paying heavily for it. Examples include...
- Turning the badass black and grey morality of the Mandalorians into fucking Mary Sues by wanking up their abilities to the stratosphere and simplifying their entire culture as that bland proud warrior race guy. Mandalorian Liege anyone?
- She supports the absurdly low numbers of the Clone Wars which did not make any sense if we take into account of the production needed to combat the Droid armies which spanned the entire galaxy. To give you an example, that is less than the entire armed forces of the Soviet Union in World War 2, you heard that right. The Clone Army, one that spans an entire galaxy has less troops than one country on one planet.
- In the Legacy of the Force this dumbass retconned the entirety of the New Jedi Order, turning the Jedis into fucking idiots such as how Jaina Solo was unable to operate the comm systems of a starfighter despite having been in Rogue Squadron and her inability to deal with Mandalorians because they, I shit you not "Can't be seen in the force" despite the fact that she participated in the entire Yuuhzan Vong War, a race of force invisible opponents. This in turn ties back to her Mandalorian porn stash.
- She rewrites entire characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi being a bloodthirsty glory hound as opposed to the wise and patient mentor and Mace Windu actively engaging in a conspiracy with Palpatine to prolong the Clone Wars for no reason other than Jedi hate.
Halo
After looking at the clusterfuck that was Star Wars, when rumors spread that Traviss next prey was Halo, thousands of Haloites screamed in horror and jumped out of the window of the upcoming fuckening. It was on Halo, where she sharpened her literature equivalent of a chainsaw and started to rip apart over a decade worth of rare consistent fluff in Halo. Within just a few years, this abomination of a writer birthed out three books called The Thursday War and Glasslands and Mortal Dictata. As expected massive fluff raping ensued and Haloites cried out in rage over the amount of fail. Shining moments includes...
- Karen Traviss apparent raging hate boner for Dr Halsey (Seems like she needed to find a scapegoat after exiting Star Wars) for no apparent reasons or just something petty, with the fact of the massive retconning so that almost everybody hates Dr. Halsey for her Spartan program of being "cruel" and "immoral", despite the fact that without her, humanity would have been extinct.
- Re-writing stuff on ONI that makes them even more of an incompetent buffoons such as being the main perpetrators of the Elite civil-war, and supplying the Elite Terrorists known as the Storm Covenant with weapons and tech, without knowing that if The Arbiter finds out...cue in Covenant-Human War 2.0 with the UNSC being horrendously shanked despite having Forerunner tech.
- Making Spartans even more of a Mary Sue such as in the case of a Spartan II killing a Brute with a single punch, despite the fact that in fluff wise a Spartan II considers fighting a Brute in CQC as suicide.
- The elimination of Lucy-B091's muteness due to PTSD which was her defining traits for...you guessed it. NO REASON! And it gets worse when she treats her like a delicate little flower pushing all the blame to Halsey again.
Final Verdict
She is overall a shit writer and a shit person, while she did wrote a few good novels, those are overshadowed with her mass crimes of mass raping and insulting the fan base. God-Emperor help us all if Karen Travis and Matt Ward decided to team up and start writing their "Own Version" of fluff, pity Halo, Star Wars and WH40K /tg/, for they are at the mercy of these monsters.
