Awlrach

The new Nighthaunt character for Third Edition, Awlrach the Drowner is a character so silly he kind of wraps around to being cool again. Drawing upon the seminal deathly imagery of a ghost ferryman, even though this isn't the first time AoS has done this given the Soulseeker Endless Spell, Awlrach is a powerful Nighthaunt spirit that flies around the battlefield on a giant spooky boat. He works alongside Kurdoss Valentian and Reikenor in the Grieving Legion Procession.

The Legend[edit | edit source]

Awlrach was a ferryman from the Realm of Aqshy, who would take men across the sea to a pleasant land filled with orchards; or so he claimed. In reality, he was a serial killer whose modus operandi was to drown his victims halfway through the voyage, only completing them in order to gather fruit to make his lie seem believable. After nearly a decade of this, his crimes were finally revealed, and an angry mob descended on him. It took eight men to overpower and bind him, and even when they tossed him into the sea he was able to drag three of them down alongside him. Given that he was this physically strong in life, it makes you question why he even bothered with the whole evil ferryman deal in the first place. Then again, he's a serial killer, who are neither sane nor sensible or they wouldn't be what they are.

Unlike other Nighthaunt, Nagash actually approved of his deeds, admiring how he pursued death for death's sake. Given what usually happens to serial killers in AoS, this certainly is a fun little hypocrisy. Regardless, he was turned into a ferryman of the dead, harvesting souls and bringing them where they need to go. Unlike other Nighthaunt, he sees his fate not as a curse, but a blessing, because now he gets to do what he loves for the rest of eternity.
