Welcome to Candy Land, a magical world of sweet adventure! Or is it? The last time you visited Candy Land you probably traveled the rainbow path and stopped along the way to explore the Peppermint Forest, the Gumdrop Mountains, and the Chocolate Swamp. Maybe you visited Gramma Nutt and the beautiful Princess Frostine too. This time it seems that Candy Land is in danger! The ever menacing Lord Licorice has released Baddies, his evil minions, upon Candy Land in hopes of taking over the Candy Castle. Now it is up to you to take on the role of one of Candy Land’s four heroes and save the day!

What You'll Need[edit | edit source]

Seeing as how this is an "expansion" of Candy Land, you'll need a copy of the Candy Land game. For the expansion, we are using the newest version of the game, so if the only one you have is from when you were 6 (and you aren't 7 or 8), you'll probably need to go out and buy a new version of the game.

You'll also need the 4 Hero Cards, 30 Baddie Cards, the Lord Licorice Card, the Item Cards (work in progress), 20 Baddie Tokens, and 2 Six-Sided Dice (1 red, 1 black). Images for the cards can be found at the bottom of this page. Eventually.

Setup[edit | edit source]

Open up the game board and place it on a flat surface (don't be mad if you feel like these are condescending rules, I'm reading them straight out of the Candy Land rule book here.)

Shuffle the deck of Baddie cards and give it to the person playing as Lord Licorice. If no one is playing as Lord Licorice, place the Baddie Deck within easy reach of all players.

Have each player pick a character and place their pawn on the Start space of the game board.

Each player then rolls Tough dice for Hit Points, adding their Tough trait score to the result of their d6 roll.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

This classic game used to not require reading or math skills, but now it does! To start play, each player rolls a Quick d6 (rolling the d6 and adding their Quick trait score to the result). The person with the highest result goes first, and in case of a tie, the person with the highest Quick trait goes first.

On your turn, draw one card from the movement card deck and move your character pawn as directed below. You then have a chance of encountering a Baddie. If you encounter one, see the Combat section below. If you are fortunate enough to evade any Baddies, your turn is over. Whichever event you experience, you must place the movement card you used in the discard pile.

Cards: When you draw a card with one color block, move you pawn forward toward the Candy Castle to the first matching color space on the path. When you draw a card with two color blocks, move your pawn forward toward the Candy Castle to the second matching color space on the path.

When you draw a Picture card, move your pawn forward or backward on the path to the PINK space on the board that matches the 'PINK picture square on your card. For example, if you draw a 'CANDY CANE/MR. MINT card, move your pawn to the pink space on the board that shows the candy cane. Pink squares are safe havens where Baddies cannot attack you, thanks to the powerful person guarding that square.

Movement:

1. Always move in the direction of the signposts, unless a Picture card directs you to move backwards on the path.

2. Two or more characters may be on the same space at the same time. If one character is on a space, and another character lands on it and encounters a Baddie, all characters on the space may work together to fight the Baddie (see Combat) for more details.

3. Shortcuts: There are 2 shortcuts on the path- the Rainbow Trail and the Gumdrop Pass. If your character lands, by exact count, on the orange space below the Rainbow Trail or on the yellow space below the Gumdrop Pass, you can take the shortcut immediately by moving your pawn to the purple space above the Rainbow Trail or the green space above the Gumdrop Pass.

4. Licorice Spaces: There are 3 Licorice Spaces on the path. These Licorice spaces were put here by the sneak Lord Licorice to try to slow you down. If you land on one of these spaces by exact count, your character is stuck there for one turn.

5. Play as above until a player reaches the multicolored rainbow space near the Candy Castle.

6. If your character is defeated by a Baddie, you return to the last pink space on the board you passed.

Combat: Now for the most part, the instructions above have been pretty similar to the original Candy Land rules, and for good reason, as I copied them straight out of the original rulebook. Here's where things get a little bit different (and a lot more fun).

Whenever you land on a new space, Lord Licorice rolls his black licorice die (the black d6). If he rolls a 4, 5, or 6, he draws a Baddie card from the Baddie Deck and places it face up for the player to fight. Combat proceeds as written below:

1. Both the player and the Baddie must roll Quick to see who gets to go first. The person with the higher Quick roll gets to go first (in case of a tie, the person with the higher Quick trait goes first, and if that is a tie as well, the player goes first). The person that gets to go first is the attacker, and the other person becomes the defender.

2. The attack rolls Strong to see if he can hit his opponent, and the defender rolls Quick to try and dodge the attack. In the case of a tie, the defender always wins.

3. If the attack hits, the attacker rolls Strong again, this time to deal damage. He adds his Strong trait to the die roll, dealing damage equal to his roll plus his Strong trait. The defender rolls Tough to try and resist some of the damage. He adds his Tough trait to the die roll, resisting damage equal to his roll plus his Tough trait. If the defender rolls a higher Tough than the attacker’s Strong, the defender still takes 1 point of damage.

4. After damage is resolved, the attacker becomes the defender, and vice versa. This continues until either the player or the Baddie is defeated, or the player flees from combat.

5. If the Baddie is defeated, the player gains a number of Baddie Tokens based on the Baddie’s level (Trash Baddies: 1 Token, Moderate Baddies: 2 Tokens, Elite Baddies: 3 Tokens).

6. If the player is defeated, he returns to the last pink space he passed.

7. If the player wants to flee from combat, he must roll Quick and get a total of 8 or higher to successfully run away. The Baddie is then reshuffled into the Baddie deck.

8. If two or more players are in the same space and a Baddie is encountered, both players can work together to fight the Baddie. After each round of combat, Lord Licorice can roll to see if another Baddie joins the battle (must roll a 5 or 6). He can do until there are a number of Baddies equal to the number of characters on a square. If a Baddie is defeated, he may not add another Baddie to the battle.

Player Defeat: If a player is defeated by a Baddie, he must return to the last pink space he passed (but not necessarily the last pink space he landed on) and he loses all Baddie tokens and items, his trait scores revert to the values printed on his character's card, and he must reroll his hit points.

Increasing Traits: After a player accumulates three or more Baddie Tokens, he can exchange them for an increase to one of his traits (Strong, Quick, Tough, Heal) or his Hit Points by 1.

Item Cards: There are two ways to get Item cards. The first method is to simply land on a pink space, which automatically lets you draw an Item card from the Item deck. The second method is to exchange 3 Baddie Tokens for a draw from the Item deck. Items have various effects, most of which are beneficial.

Winning the Game: If you are the first person to reach the multicolored rainbow space, you’ve reached the Candy Castle. But it’s not over yet! Now you have to face the nefarious Lord Licorice! The first player to defeat Lord Licorice (no easy task) and rescue the Candy King wins the game and saves the day!

Playing as Lord Licorice[edit | edit source]

In a game with 3 to 5 players, one of the players can play as Lord Licorice, the wicked man trying to take over Candy Land. Unlike the four heroes, Lord Licorice does not move from his spot outside of the gates of the Candy Castle. Instead, Lord Licorice commands his minions to try and defeat the players.

Each time a player lands on a new square, Lord Licorice rolls his black licorice die. On a result of 4, 5, or 6, he gets to draw a Baddie from his Baddie Deck and have it fight the player. He rolls the Baddie’s Strong, Quick, Tough, and Heal rolls as though the Baddie was his character. If his Baddie is defeated it is sent to the discard pile, and if it wins the battle it is shuffled back into the Baddie deck at full HP. After all of the Baddies are sent to the discard pile (with the exception of Gloppy, who always returns to the Baddie Deck), all Baddies are reshuffled back into the deck. When one or more players reach Candy Castle, they have to fight Lord Licorice himself. The person playing as Lord Licorice uses the Lord Licorice character card as his own card and proceeds to fight the player. If the player wins, Lord Licorice is defeated and the player wins the game.

The Heroes[edit | edit source]

With the Candy King imprisoned within his own castle by the nefarious Lord Licorice, it is up to four mighty heroes of Candy Land to rescue the king and save the day. Each of the heroes came from the farthest reaches of Candy Land to try and defeat Lord Licorice and his army of Baddies. The heroes are:

Sir Cinnamon the Red

Originally a barbarian from the cold, frozen ice cream wastes of the far north, Sir Cinnamon was knighted by the Candy King years ago after the Battle of Gumdrop Pass where he single-handedly held the line for six days and seven nights. Sir Cinnamon is well-known to be one of the strongest men in Candy Land and the possessor of Candy Land's shortest temper. He is fiery and passionate, but above all else he is a dependable knight and champion of the people of Candy Land. Sir Cinnamon was the first of the four heroes to answer the call to arms to rescue the Candy King.

Lord Lemon the Yellow

Lord Lemon hails from the far eastern Pixie Stick Jungles where he practices his mystical sword techniques daily. He is a quiet fellow, more of a loner than the other heroes. His trademark technique, the Lightning-Fast Lemon Slice, has ended the lives of more than one Baddie, and it will be needed if King Candy is to be rescued from the clutches of Lord Licorice. Everyone in Candy Land knows that no one is faster than Lord Lemon the Yellow. Lord Lemon was the last hero to arrive in the Gingerbread Forest, but many believe he will be the first to make it to the Candy Castle.

Baronet Berry the Blue

Baronet Berry the Blue is the highest ranking magician in the Magic Circle, the band of magicians that call the western reaches of the Lollipop Forest home. When she heard that Candy Castle was under siege by Lord Licorice, she immediately made her way to the Gingerbread Forest to meet up with Sir Cinnamon and Lady Lime. Baronet Berry is a mighty healer, and her magical skills will be needed if King Candy is to be rescued.

Lady Lime the Green

The Warden of the Southern Shores of the Soda Seas, Lady Lime was originally the bodyguard of King Candy. She was given the Soda Pop Fortress for her years of service, and now serves as Candy Land's southern Warden. She was the second hero to answer the call to arms, just after Sir Cinnamon. Lady Lime is sturdy and dependable, but a bit tomboyish. She and Sir Cinnamon have a friendly rivalry.
