Iceworld

My idea for the country was a group of islands trapped in a perpetually frozen sea, to travel between these islands people would modified sail boats with outriggers. The would slide across the ice via sails, this would cause great static electricity which would be collected in a steel ball hanging off the mast which would melt the ice in front of the ship to make it flat. To turn the ships would you a spiked ball on a long chain that would be shot/thrown out to the side and then pulled on by ogres or maybe the ship itself? Inside the chain is a secondary rope that would be pulled to retract the spikes and let the anchor be recovered.

Maybe the dominant race is like the drow they hate the sunlight, so they moved to the place with the longest uninterrupted night. Their cities are underground to hide from the short daylight period

We are. We're collaborating on a mind flayer who works out. He's probably a dick though. I mean, imagine it. He's part of a race who are almost entirely cerebral. Everyone is constantly involved in studying arcane relics or planning world domination or just generally swotting to toady up to the Elder Brain. He's the lone frat-boy in a world of nerds.

if u altered the spin of the planet slightly or the orbit path you could get the arctic to be darker for longer periods of time. Maybe every year there would be a "great sleep" or something where the drow would have to bunker down for the month or two of sun

To wrangle the attention in, why don't we throw some flayer love into the setting? The BBEG i mentioned was actually a monk. shit was cash.Think of the awesome that would come from ascetic time bending mind flayers.

There needs to be a sizable Human empire seeking to colonize the land as well. Setting us up for some sweet faction wars.

Maybe give the gunpowder weaponry as a sort of equalizer?

A blessing by an elder god, maybe? or some other world changing event. Maybe the god changed the axis but at the same time let loose creatures that live in the perpetual blackness that have been steadily traveling south and adapting to the shadows instead of pure blackness.

far to the South lies a land of constant darkness and unyielding tundra. here vile dakr skinned elves hunt the unwary, and the natives fight a constant battle against the ancient Drow threat and the newly arrived strangers who have rods that can rain fire down at will.

So if this place was previously lit up and sunny, it could of been full of rolling hills and full of life. civilizations fell as the sun shrank away, and a eternal blanket of col washed over. leaving behind a wealth of locales to explore and raid for those brave enough to try.

I was thinking humans with some larger beefer (viking?) ship captains to use the anchor, maybe even captured monstrous humanoids. But primarily a human transport. It could be used as a planet wide transport with a little tweaking, Imagine Drow sleek ice warships against armor reinforced sturdy human ships

so viking slavers with landboats. that harness static electricity. awesome. just awesome.

Also, i am using this. i don't know how, but its lurking in this place. a legendary beast, told around the skald-fires of these lightning vikings and whispered about amongst the snow-drow..

Also the ships primary use other than transportation was to hunt huge sea creatures that live under the ice. ( the organs of these creatures where used for different purposes. Lungs- where strung out the make sails that would never tear, Heart- would be melted with steel to create super conductive metal, etc)

sounds excellent. yearly ritual hunt perhaps? one of those could make a lot of sails and clothes and such...talk about a coming of age ritual! for the record, is anyone else buy sanguineVirus and I still here?
