Intellect Devourer

Intellect Devourers are a species of aberration in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. Created by the illithids, intellect devourers are psychic monstrosities that appear as disembodied humanoid brains running around on four small paw like legs. They have the ability to suck the brains out of humanoid beings and then teleport themselves into the now-empty skull cavity in order to use their body as a corpse-puppet.
This might have debuted in White Dwarf #25, "Fiend Factory", as the Brain Sucker. Either way it's in the second Monster Manual.
A very similar brain-on-legs monster called Ustilagor was originally a mobile fungus that just happened to look like a brain (this also parallels a Fiend Factory beastie: #21, Enslaver), but got retconned as Baby Intellect Devourers in 2nd Edition. They are distinguished by their long, slimy tentacles.
Warning: If you value your eye sockets, do not kill PC's with these fuckers.
In pathfinder, with illithid being copyrighted, Intellect Devourers strike out by themselves, being infiltration agents of the Dominion of the Black, a cabal of evil aliens that worship Lovecraft gods. 2e toned down by removing the brain draining, so they have to do it manually by clawing you to death. This trade with them gaining spellcasting to help further thier own rule of self-determined agents.
