Kanks are a species of giant insect native to the Dungeons & Dragons world of Dark Sun, where they are one of the two signature "herd-beasts" of Athas, alongside the erdlu. These big bugs are natural wanderers and scavengers, large enough to carry people and cargo. They also produce a green honey called "kank nectar", which is thirst-quenching, reasonably nourishing (though you can't live off of it exclusively for too long) and can be distilled into potent if vile liquor. Also, their chitin is easily workable into armor, and they are quite docile (by Athasian standards, at least). The only downside to herding them is that you can't eat them - it is a literal running gag in Dark Sun bestiary entries to note that this latest abomination against sanity will eat anything but kank meat. They are primarily herded by elves, who appreciate that the minimal need to care for kanks gives them more time to have fun and relax, saving the occasional bit of hunting and foraging for food to supplement their kank nectar.
