Shantaks are amongst the assorted non-sapient aliens and monsters created by H.P. Lovecraft for his Cthulhu Mythos. They are described as wyvern-like scaly bird-things with horse-like faces, but as big as an elephant. Able to travel between planets under their own power, they are often summoned by sorcerers who wish to travel to different worlds, although their would-be riders have to furnish their own magical protections, such as a protective draught of Space Mead, or else they risk dying of freezing and/or suffocation during the journey.
