T1: The Village of Hommlet

The Hamlet of Vallidge by Gary Gygax is the iconic small-town adventure-base for the Big Eeevil Dungeon.

Hommlet is here as alternative for big-city bases like the classic Blackmoor and Greyhawk. So of course its dungeon couldn't be Greyhawk or Blackmoor themselves - which sites were handed off for others to finish, Rob Kuntz in Greyhawk's case. It had to be something else so, the Temple of Elemental Evil.

This hamlet is a roleplaying paradise in its own right, full of memorable characters, like Otis the ranger. Two religions jockey for position, alongside the Elemental Evil cult. There's even a village idiot, whom Gary probably should have named "Brian Blume".

You don't actually see the Temple here, but you do get to visit a Moathouse - an abandoned keep - with lots of beasties and loot.

TSR published this in 1979, as "T1" for "Temple" series. We then... didn't get the series, for several years. Eventually Frank Mentzer collected all the hadiths about the dungeon he could find and published the lot (including Hommlet) as a single book with a map booklet, in 1985, as "T1-4".
