Nostramo, also known as Space Gotham, was a Hive World known for being dark as fuck even at midday because of its pollution and the dying star it circled as sun. Also it was infested with criminal gangs and ruled by corrupt nobles. The planet was so depressive that the population of Nostramo was under control not by starvation or war, but by the suicide rate. But things went better when the Space Marine Batman arrived there. He fell to the Nostramo in his gestation capsule like his brother primarchs did. But he wasn't adopted by anyone, he survived there by his own, eating the vermin of hive city, killing anyone he come across (most of them were murderous gangsters anyway). After realizing that he was much stronger than the people of Nostramo, he tried to cleanse the hive city from the murderous gangs and criminals. He always left the corpse of his victims in eyesight to seed the fear in the hearts of the people. It worked out pretty well. A terrifing stablity was settled upon the Nostramo by terror of the Night Haunter, every criminal was killed, every noble (who didn't get killed) was oppressed by fear. The people of Nostramo made him their first monarch in the planet's history because this is what you should do when Batman pops up in your planet. His rule was the golden age for the planet, the exports was tripled, the crime rate was near zero even if they were ruled by some sort of boogie man. But a short time later, E-Money arrived on Nostramo in his golden armor so shining, hundreds of Nostramons were blinded by it. His coming was prophesied in Nostramo's history, as the beginning of the apocalypse. Night Haunter submitted to his rule, he delegated the planet to the Imperial governors and it became the recruitment world for Night Lords. Well, it didn't worked out well, as the Night Haunter left the planet, Nostramo returned to his good old criminal society. Some say, the Emperor did that in purpose, in order to get better terror units for Night Lords or he just didn't care about Nostramo or Night Lords because they will never be Ultramarines. Also the Night Haunter didn't build any law enforcement agency, police force or something, he really was the only thing that prevents the people of Nostramo to turn into criminals. He also didn't give them any reasons to live or improve besides fear of being killed by him. After some events involving Fulgrim and Rogal Dorn, already mentally unstable Night Haunter decided that Nostramo was so fucked up and cannot be saved. His fleet orbital bombarded Nostramo until all human life was eradicated from its surface. Then bombarded it some more until it blew up and pieces of it flung across the space - just to be sure. So this was the fall of the most fucking grimdark hive world in the galaxy.
Nostramo, with his psycic foresight of worst possible future and maybe some mistakes made by The Emperor in his creation, is accepted as the reason Night Haunter went rogue and later joined Chaos. The traumatizing and depressive environment of Nostramo damaged Konrad Curze's sanity heavily and caused him to think only the fear keeps people loyal. Also seeing Nostramo's descend into a criminal shithole again made him to think the terror tactics eventually fails miserably which is the cause of his destruction of the planet.
On a side note, Nostramo used to be extremely rich in adamantium ore - and in fact it's premadarkness was mostly caused by adamantium mining and processing factories. Asteroids formed from blewn-up Nostramo often happen to be adamntium-rich too, and so they tend to attract mechanicum and rogue trader asteroid mining crews (everyone else would likely think twice before venturing to the system Imperium classified as "forbidden") only for them to ger wiped out in the most horrifying ways possible when the Night Lords routinely check the remnants of their homeworld.
