Obsidian Dragon

Obsidian Dragons are an obscure species of dragon who have appeared twice in the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. The one everybody remembers is the evil fiery Gem Dragon invented in Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition on the Wizards of the Coast website, but the name first appeared in Dragon Magazine #146 in the article “The Dragon's Bestiary: All dragons, great and small”.
AD&D Version[edit | edit source]
Appearing alongside the Cobra Dragon and one of the first iterations of the Gray Dragon, the old-school obsidian dragon is stated to be native to Greyhawk, specifically hailing from northern Oerik. Spanning the Lawful alignment grid but largely tending towards benevolence (Lawful Good: 66%, Lawful Neutral: 25%, Lawful Evil: 10%), these obsidian dragons are speculated to have originated in the Land of Black Ice, and to be a more powerful relative of the Silver Dragon. They have two breath weapons; a cone of "black acidic frost", and a "membranous web of black ice" that can be used to encase victims in an icy prison. They are also fairly powerful spellcasters.
3e Version[edit | edit source]
The forgotten Gem Dragon, 3e obsidan dragons are given very little lore or characterization beyond being the most intelligent and evil of the gem dragons, favoring the Inner Planes as their residence of choice, and being outcasts from greater gem dragon society ever since their Thane, Seradess, was slain by Sardior for some unknown offense. Unlike their "black ice" counterparts, these obsidian dragons are associated with fire, spewing gouts of flame and wielding powerful pyrokinetic abilities.
