Some machines've legs instead of wheels or tracks, letting them walk around like animals to various degrees depending on complexity. This has the advantage of better all-terrain ability, meaning they can climb over rough ground that'd be a no-go for conventional wheels or even tracks, but results in more complicated drive mechanisms that're harder to maintain and pricier to replace. For some reason, a lot of sci-fi's tend to make them humanoid, despite this being a bad idea in general at that scale, but who're we to argue, it's Awesome.
