The Ork Empire of Charadon is one of the largest and longest-lasting Ork Empires in the Galaxy, beaten only by the Orks at Ullanor during the Great Crusade and The Beast. Centered around the Charadon System in Ultima Segmentum. Its ruling Warlord is known as the Arch-Arsonist of Charadon.

Like most Ork Empires, the Ork Empire of Charadon started off as a tribe of unclothed savages. However, these greenskins eventually start to become more cohesive under the brutal dictatorial rule of a Warboss or Warlord. The Ork Empire of Charadon is just one of the many numerous Ork empires, each spreading across the galaxy like a noxious green stain, and no star system is entirely devoid of their touch. However, the Empire of Charadon is one of the largest and most powerful.

Some theorize that the Orks do not use conventional methods of interstellar travel because they follow some deep-seated instinctual plan of galactic conquest, but the truth is far simpler. The Greenskins have not mastered the art of space travel because they really do not care where they are going, only that they get to fight whatever is there when they arrive.

As of 8th Edition, the Ork Empire of Charadon has ballooned up to being the largest Ork Empire in recent Imperium history. This is thanks in no part due to the actions of the Great Rift and the disarray of Imperial forces. Seriously, its territory reaches from the doorsteps of Nocturne to Schindelgheist, basically covering roughly a quarter of Ultima Segmentum. The Empire is currently having territorial overlaps with the Sautekh Dynasty. Inquisitorial reports indicate that the Arch-Arsonist is one of the most powerful and dangerous Warlords in existence, tied with good ol' Ghazghkull in influence.

Overview[edit | edit source]

A map of Charadon. How in the Emperor's mummified nipples that a Crusade has not yet been called is unknown.

As previously mentioned, the Ork Empire of Charadon is the largest and most long lasting Ork Empire in existence and has been a bane of Ultima Segmentum for countless centuries. This mostly has consisted of raids and failed attacks though, as there are very few documented cases of the Orks of Charadon ever actually pursuing successful wars against the Imperium. Like most Ork Empires Charadon is not capable of mustering forces with which to threaten the Imperium significantly, and is largely limited to raids which are routinely beaten off by Space Marines.

Until recently, the expansion of the Charadon empire has been limited by the Ultramarines and forces led by Librarian Tigurius have made surgical strikes upon the Arch-Arsonist's forces, preventing them from being able to organize a full scale Waaagh! into Ultramar itself.

However Tigurius's efforts are beginning to wane in the wake of Tyranid encroachment into Ultima Segmentum as the Ultramarines can no longer spare troops to hold the nearby Ork empire in check. The major Ork Empire of Charadon has seized its chance and recently invaded the Ultramar system. However, as of the beginning of the Plague Wars no mention was made of this invasion, or of Ultramar being in any form of threat. This has been explained as the Arch-Arsonist have redirected his WAAAGH! to the north where the Great Rift opened up. It helps explain how the empire inflated in size and why there was no reports of any significant Ork incursions into Ultramar space.

Charadon[edit | edit source]

Charadon itself is the capital world of the great Ork empire, situated in the Imperium's Segmentum Ultima. Charadon is one of many small, independent and mutually hostile Ork domains scattered across the galaxy. It is ruled by the tyrannical Ork Warlord Snagrod the Arch-Arsonist, a particularly vicious and sadistic leader of a race noted for its generally vicious and sadistic tendencies.

Snagrod's bloody wars of conquest have transformed Charadon into the most powerful state within the anarchic confines of Ork space. Charadon is located near the Imperial world of Badlanding and through Warp-travel is only a few weeks away from Rynn's World, homeworld of the Crimson Fists Space Marine Chapter, which Snagrod's WAAAGH! assaulted in 989.M41. The ensuing battle saw the near total destruction of the Crimson Fists and the destruction of their fortress-monastery, however, Snagrod was unable to secure victory and, additionally, lost in a personal battle to Chapter Master Pedro Kantor as well, forced to flee off-world with his beaten forces after the arrival of Imperial reinforcements. It should be noted that the assault by the Orks of Charadon on Rynn's World was aided by the fact that most of the Crimson Fists Space Marines had already died due to an accidental misfire of their own weapons, with the Orks only fighting, and losing, to a very small minority of remaining Space Marines.

Winning by Losing Slowly[edit | edit source]

The largest empire of orks isn't built on chance alone, but through good, orkish kunnin. First, instead of launching a large-scale military raid, which can fail, they launch numerous small raids. Each small advance succeeds or fails, but it satiates ork bloodlust and keeps the empire strong and angry. This, in turn, keeps it all from falling apart. Secondly, the title of arch-arsonist is a unique one. Each arch-arsonist assumes the guise of a flaming, berzerker avatar. A single ork, even a mighty warboss, can be killed but an avatar of flame only needs a new warboss to assume the guise. Thus, the empire grows: ever-smoldering and unbreakable.
