Typhoon

The Hawker Typhoon, was a British close air support craft from WWII that served in the RAF, with the intent of replacing the Hawker Hurricane. However, the Typhoon sucked balls at this job, but then the Bongs figured they could strap a couple 20mm Cannons to the thing and use it as a close air support aircraft.

The Hawker Typhoon first started as a technical demand by the war office for an aircraft with 12 Browning .303 Machine guns. Early Hurricanes filled this requirement, but many British pilots were initially skeptical of the new aircraft. For one thing, the Spitfire was a decent enough craft and was nimble enough to keep up with anything the Luftwaffe could throw at them, while the Hawker was faster in a straight line. The more glaring problem was that the aircraft tended to have nasty bugs that usually required somebody dying before they learned how to fix them, including one where Carbon monoxide would flow directly into the cockpit. However, after these problems were resolved, British pilots adored the raw power and speeds of 400MPH (~637KPH), along with the fact that it was a stable gun platform at said speeds.

Another problem was that the Typhoon's intended targets, the big strategic bombers, were no longer relevant, as Hitler basically gave up on trying to penetrate England. Instead, they found a new role as low altitude escort craft, where they would use their absurd firepower to chase FW-190s and BF-109s that were attempting to disrupt shipping with raids. When the V1 rockets started flying, the Typhoons were converted into fighter bombers so they could fling 250-500 pound bombs on launch sites and anything else stupid enough to be in the vicinity.

Typhoons were also critical to the success of British forces at the Normandy landings, providing brutal barrages of machine gun, cannon, bombs, rockets, and empty tea cups against everything from hedgerows, bridges, and armoured columns. British losses in these missions were rather high, due to the focus and development of AA tanks and vehicles in an attempt to counter Allied Air Power.
