The SdKfz 250 was originally developed in order to add mobility and armored protection to troops traveling with Panzers. The vehicle was reliable and popular, and was slated to replace the Opel Blitz as the standard troop transport for Panzergrenadiers, but this vision was never realized throughout the war.

The 250 was equipped with a frontally mounted MG34 and decent armor that protected it from small arms fire. However, it paled in comparison to the M3, with it's M2 Browning MG. There were also dedicated scout varients that had 20mm, 37mm, and even 75mm cannons mounted into it, though more often they were used as artillery support vehicles and command vehicle for officers.
