The 8 cm Granatwerfer 34, or just the GrW 34, was an infantry support weapon used by the German army throughout World War II.

IRL[edit | edit source]

The GrW 34 was a dedicated heavy mortar used for bombarding enemy defensive positions in the Second World War. As the technical designation would suggest, it was developed back when trench warfare was far more popular in the military circles of Europe.

However, the 34 was light enough to be adapted into the Blitzkrieg tactics spearheaded by Hans Guderian and other armored warfare theorists. The weapon earned a favorable reputation among its crews for high accuracy. Said crews often were able to get the weapon firing quickly, making it a respectable weapon. It could achieve ranges of over two kilometers (Or a mile and a quarter) and usually flung 3.5 kg (7lb) shells of pure unadultered Fascist death.

The 34 started to show its age in Operation Barbarossa, where the advent of Soviet 12cm mortars that they borrowed from France began to outperform the 8 cm. This in turn led to the development of the Granatwerfer 42, though the 34 saw service until the end of the war.
