No, not those kinds of spacebattles.

Spacebattles.com is a long running web forum[1], mainly focused on Science Fiction, Fantasy, and “Military” stuff, of interest for our purposes because it has a few popular boards:

  • Versus Debates, where people use "logic", "math", and "common sense" (in quotation marks because Spacebattles logic in Vs Debates rarely resembles our Earth logic) to debate, say, whether the Enterprise could beat a Star Destroyer and if Superman could beat Goku.
  • Questing and Roleplay, which we mention only so that we can say we already mentioned them, shut up. (Includes 40k stuff, of the usual wildly varying quality.)
  • Creative Writing, the only reason we have this article.

CW is relevant to us mainly because it hosts a lot of fanfiction. A lot of fanfiction. Some of it even good, and in highly /tg/ relevant settings.

In particular, Everqueen, Messages for Dad and This Won't End Well, three high profile Warhammer 40k stories, originated there. Also here are Out of the Dark and (whatever the fuck this is).

Also found on CW:

  • A metric shitload of Worm fics, of wildly varying qualities, to the point that the mods made a subforum just for Wormfic, just so people could filter the damn things out.
  • An "Original Fiction" subforum, for people with "original" works (donut steel). Currently (as of 2023) filled with xianxia, since one author managed to self-publish successfully.

Besides Worm, there is a lot of ASoIAF stuff, and whatever's currently popular with that section of geekdom that likes action, and easy to write fanfic for (Naruto, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, DC, Mass Effect have all had their waves of unending fanfiction, although none were as truly omnipresent as Worm was, and still is), usually of marginally higher quality than can be found via the same means on fanfiction.net (in part due to the slightly older, more action-focused audience) Note that this also includes such wonders as “Harry Potter with a GUN!!1!1” and a fascination with Youjo Senki. [2]

The site has a decent reader mode that shows only thread-marked posts (normally the main story) that’s useful for any thread past 2014. Ignore the tag system, this isn’t a booru and about half the authors use it. Moderators here are mods, and not particularly good ones.

Also of note, the site has a spin off forum called Sufficient Velocity which is slightly softer in terms of content. There is also a NSFW related forum called Questionable Questing [3].

  1. Since 1998, which would make it a year younger than Google, and 5 years older than 4chan.
  2. *technically not a war crime* *totally justified uses of force* *training with live arty* *humorous misunderstanding leads to war breaking out* -- and that last one probably explains about a quarter of the fascination, thinking on it.
  3. Long story short: After a forum purge of NSFW quests and fanfic on SpaceBattles, a bunch of SBers moved their stuff to QQ, an already existing forum using the same software that served NSFW questing and writers. The SB influx was so large that most people forget that QQ wasn't once just "Spacebattles with NSFW".
