"They say that we will defend our posts to the last Marine. That will probably be me"

– Captain Edsson To'llet, 2nd Company

"As you all know too well, it’s long past time to dig a new latrine pit. Techmaester Yarwyck and I have decided to appoint a latrine captain to oversee this crucial task... Brother Bryon. Seems like a good job for a ginger."

– Captain Jhon Snow, 7th Company

The Night Watch (no relation to Terry Pratchett or Rembrandt van Rijn, though perhaps some inspiration taken from the Night's Watch from A Song of Ice and Fire) is a loyalist Space Marine chapter part of the Astartes Praeses, a group of twenty space marine chapters whose duty it is to guard the regions surrounding the Eye of Terror. They are based on the planet Silence (Night Watch, Silence, I see what theme they are doing here...) which is directly north of the Eye of Terror. They are noted to not be strict adherents to the Codex Astartes, as during the 13th Black Crusade they fielded eleven companies of Space Marines. It could be, being so near the Eye of Terror that the Night Watch feel the need to maintain more companies then normal to keep their battle strength up, in the face of constant warfare from the Traitor Legions.

They have taken part in two major actions, the 13th Black Crusade where they devoted eleven companies to the action, and the Zeist Campaign against the Tau Empire where several Night Watch Tactical Squads took part.

Daily Rituals of the Night Watch[edit]

04:00 - Rousing from slumber and Morning Prayer. Brothers of the Night Watch are roused from their cells by servitor-Ravens; their cells are quite spartan, even by Astartes standards, being little more than alcoves carved into the walls of the Fortress-Monastery. Some of the Brothers pray for PROMOTIONS so that they may be rewarded with larger beds, on the off-chance that they may one day bring a Sororitas home.

05:00 - Morning Firing Rites. Brothers of the Night Watch begin morning Bolter Drills. The silhouettes they use for Target Practice represent various Traitor Marines; those representing Slaaneshi traitors are absolutely riddled with holes as the younger Brothers vent their frustrations.

07:00 - Battle Practice. The Brothers descend to the Battle Cages. Older veterans bemoan the inexperience of the "new recruits", the new recruits mutter that the Night Watch is a mere shadow of what it once was. Those who perform well are given a chance to accompany the First Company in their ranging.

12:00 - Ranging the Frontiers. The First Company, along with some of the more promising new recruits, leave the Fortress-Monastery to patrol the fringes of the Eye of Terror.

13:00 - Midday Meal. The Brothers who have stayed behind return to the Great Hall for a light-meal. Unlike other more codex-compliant chapters, their meals are prepared by one of their own, Sergeant "Three-Finger" Hobb. Some of the Brothers wonder if the other more knightly chapters have better meals than they do.

13:15 - Tactical Indoctrination. The Servitor-Ravens deliver summons from the Chapter Master to the more belligerent brothers, where they are "gently reminded" of their vows.

15:00 - Patrols. The Brothers of the Night Watch patrol their homeworld, on the lookout for any burgeoning cults, or Chaos Raids; most of the time, however, Chaos comes to them, and the Brothers practice their aim while firing from the Fortress-Monastery's battlements.

19:00 - Patrols and Rangers Return. The brothers return from their ranging/patrols, often returning with hunted game and Traitors. Occasionally, one of the Brothers will return with a human woman, claiming they have fallen in love. The Chaplains immediately separate the two, checking the woman for the taint of Chaos, and delivering the wayward brother to the Chapter Master for another round of hypno-indoctrination.

20:00 - Evening Prayer. The Night Watch offer prayers once more. Newer recruits make their prayers to their Spritual Liege, while Firstborns go to the Emperor's Woods for quiet contemplation about their celibacy.

21:00 - Evening Meal. A feast is held in the Great Hall, using the game brought back by the Rangers.

21:45 - Night Patrols. The Brothers rotate patrol duty, but often this job is given to the softest, or those that annoy the veterans.

23:45 - Free Time. Some of the Brothers sneak out to Human Settlements, hoping for someone to "warm their beds." They are immediately found and returned by Servitor-Ravens

00:00 - Rest Period. Night Watch return to sleep in their cells.
