Unfortunately the Dakkajet with its bonuses of being equipped with different weapons has essentially replaced the Fighta is almost every category. Pretty useless now since the damned Dakkajet does everything it did better. The only thing going for the Fighta is that it can be upgraded to BS3 and can be offered as a cheap cannon fodder to shield enemy anti-air fire from the more important flyers and annoy the living hell out of enemy flyers. It is the low tier spam plane in Ork fleets and the Fighta-Bommer is the one for actual Skwadrons that can maybe suvive one flight.
Unfortunately, as of 8th Edition the Fighta has been superseded by the larger Dakkajet. As a result, on the tabletop the Fighta is now an all-but-forgotten footnote since the Dakkajet does everything the Fighta did and does it better too, with the exception of carrying external ordnance. Other than that, about the only thing that the Fighta has going for it is that according to the Imperial Armor Index Xenos: 1 PDF file, it is only Power Score 6, compared to 7 for the Dakkajet. Therefore it can be used as cheap cannon fodder to shield more important flyers from anti-aircraft fire, while still annoying the living hell out of enemy flyers. It is definitely the entry-level, low tier spam plane in Ork air groups.

Its bigger and more nastier brother is the Fighta-Bommer so if you see a squadron of Fightas, you can bet that a Fighta-Bommer or two is right behind them.

One pint sized powerhouse.

Ork Fightas, aka Attack Fightas, are one of the smallest if not THE smallest type of fixed-wing aircraft produced by Ork Mek Boyz and are thus used for dog-fighting and ground attack. They are built primarily for speed and firepower in order to satiate the addictions of Ork Flyboyz. While a Fighta can only carry a small wing-mounted payload of bombs or rockets, it carries two twin big shootas for maximum shameless firepower masturbation at close range, because Ork Fighta Pilots love nothing more then to fly in close to an enemy aircraft and gun it down. Of course like all Ork designs, the Fighta favors high rate of fire over actual accuracy, so the chances of an individual shot actually hitting anything still remains low.

Despite its crude design, when flying in a straight line a Fighta is easily a match for any Imperial Navy fighter and its engine is remarkably effective, capable of producing a huge amount of thrust. It retains its maneuverability by using two thrust nozzles angled sideways to change the aircraft's trajectory. Using these engine nozzles tends to throw the aircraft violently into its new directions, giving the appearance that the Flyboy is wildly out of control, a feature that strangely appeals to the crazed pilot as he careens through the sky.

Its bigger and nastier brother was the Fighta-Bommer so if you saw a squadron of Fightas, you could bet that a group of Fighta-Bommers was right behind them.

The Fighta was originally available via Forgeworld but it was discontinued to make way for the new plastic Ork fighter kits.
